The WOCE International Project (formerly Planning) Office (WIPO)

The Staff and Functions

The International Project Office managed WOCE in cooperation with international scientific and intergovernmental bodies; it co-ordinated the implementation of the WOCE field programme; it interacted with national WOCE committees, and offices as well as related global programmes; it monitored and oversaw the management of WOCE data sets; and it ensured good information flow among WOCE participants.

The Project Office was staffed by a Director, one to three staff scientists, and a secretary/administrative assistant. The staff provided scientific advice to, and served as secretariat for, the WOCE Scientific Steering Group (SSG) and its working groups, committees and panels. (The composition and tasks of the latter are found in the reports published by the office and are reviewed in the pages "The Origins, Development and Conduct of WOCE".)

A central task for the Office was to obtain, evaluate and disseminate information concerning the activities of the scientists involved in the WOCE field, data analysis and modelling programmes. This information was used to coordinate national activities, to identify planning needs and resource shortfalls, and to assess the progress of the experiment in relation to its scientific goals.
