WOCE Bibliography - An Introduction

Abstract
Keyword AIMS - Refereed article attributed to project WOCE
Keyword UNPUBW - WOCE Unpublished/Grey literature
Keyword FIELDW - WOCE Field/Data Report

Summary by Numbers

In mid July 2002 the WOCE Bibliography contained about 6350 references of which about 1675 are refereed publications attributable to the project. There are also about 1400 references from (technically) unpublished or grey literature and about 75 project field/data reports. About 3200 references to other refereed articles have been included. These are from other projects, and individual or group research programmes which were carried out in the WOCE time frame, and like WOCE, were also concerned with the large scale circulation of the ocean.
Graph of growth of Biblio Contents
The accompanying figure shows the growth of the bibliography in both the WOCE and non-WOCE entries.

How refereed publications are attributed to WOCE

This is done in a number of ways. If the authors acknowledged WOCE support. If the WOCE national committees, now almost without exception defunct, included them in lists which they periodically produced. (Such lists were provided by Canada, France, Germany, Japan, UK, USA). If the authors employed WOCE data. And finally where authors were key WOCE players.

Of course there is some subjectivity in these categories and especially where Ocean General Circulation Model development and results were reported. (If uncertain the keyword MODELW was used). Publications concerned with Ocean Models are a significant fraction of the WOCE bibliography - about one third in all.

Where are the WOCE publications?
Results from the WOCE project are found throughout the oceanographic literature with the major journals containing the majority of the references. However there are a small number of special collections which have often followed on a WOCE workshop. Here is the list.

Acknowledgement
The bibliography was an initiative of the then director of the WOCE International Project Office, Dr John Gould, and became the work of three individuals, Pauline Simpson librarian of the UK National Oceanographic Library, Katherine Bouton of the WOCE Data Information Unit and Peter Saunders of the WOCE International Project Office (author of this article). Additional information is found in an article in the International WOCE Newsletter No. 33 (December 1998) in which the utility of selected keywords is demonstrated.
