Limitations and Restrictions

The values for salinity from the NOAA cruises were calculated from conductivity, in contrast to the values for pH, total alkalinity, and calcium, which were measured directly. For the NORPAX data, calcium was measured using the method of Tsunogai et al., (1968) and Olson and Chen (1981) with a precision of ° 15 µmol/kg. These rather large imprecisions were caused by excess evaporation of the samples due to the lightweight polyethylene bottles that were used to store samples. Some calcium values were reanalyzed and these values are provided along with the NORPAX data. Total CO2 was calculated using the measured pH and alkalinity values, however, these values are not included in the appendices of the pertinent literature or the computerized data files. More information concerning these calculations may be found in the pertinent literature.
