Limitations and Restrictions

The values for salinity are calculated from conductivity, in contrast to the values for pH, total alkalinity, and calcium which were measured directly. Only a limited number of subsurface pCO2 samples were taken. Chen calculated the TCO2 and pCO2 values using the measured pH and alkalinity values, however, these values were not included in this package. More information concerning these calculations may be found in the pertinent literature (available in the published printed version of this document).

Calcium measurements were made for only five of the vertical stations (9, 27, 28, 36, and 37) using stored samples. Some of these samples froze unexpectedly during transit. This may have caused some of the seawater to have been pushed out of the Amber plastic bottles when the ice formed. Also, calcium carbonate precipitates could have formed when the water froze and some particles might not have redissolved when the ice melted thus changing the overall composition of the sample. Consequently, the calcium measurements may not represent real values and should be used with caution.
