This is one of the laboratories of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) system. The main task assigned to the Institute was to increase and improve the yield and quality of salt.
To carry out research and development work in fields of salt, marine and other allied inorganic chemicals including catalysis.
To develop technologies for the desalination of brackish and seawater and for industrial separation.
To carry out survey and promote cultivation and utilization of marine algae.
To promote exploitation of costal dune sand and saline and non -saline wasteland soils through introduction and cultivation of indigenous and exotic plants of industrial value.
A wide range of modern instruments of characterization and structure determination of chemicals, X-ray diffraction(single crystal and powder), gas chromatographic analysis, atomic absorption spectrometer, FTIR, FT-NMR, HPLC, GPC etc.
