Introduction
Return to Home
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has been carrying out oceanographic and
marine meteorological observations on board research vessels, at the coastal water
temperature observation stations and by ocean data buoys, for the purposes of
prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, monitoring the oceanic condition
and its variation, and international cooperation activities.
This Data Report contains the data obtained from the observations made by JMA
in 1998 together with the explanations. The observations include the followings:
- Oceanographic Observations on board Research Vessels
Oceanographic observations are conducted in the seas adjacent to Japan and in
the western North Pacific on board six vessels: the Ryofu Maru,
the Keifu Maru (both operated by Climate and Marine Department
at the Headquarters), the Kofu Maru (operated by Hakodate Marine
Observatory), the Shumpu Maru (by Kobe Marine Observatory),
the Chofu Maru (by Nagasaki Marine Observatory) and the Seifu
Maru (by Maizuru Marine Observatory).
- Coastal Water Temperature Observations
JMA has carried out water temperature observations at the coastal stations.
Historical time series of 10 day and monthly mean temperatures, daily
observations and hourly observations are available in this CD-ROM.
- Ocean Data Buoy Observations
Ocean data buoys are operated to make marine meteorological and oceanographic
observationsin the seas around Japan since 1973.
