|2014-08-23 09:01:23||Tab 3: Data Types||Not sure why Sampling Instrument is required... what do you enter for a model derived parameter?||Thank you for your comments. We are considering how to address this for a future release.|
|2014-08-23 09:00:26||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Help column says "Data Quality Method" but the entry field says "Information"||Thank you for your comment. We have updated the text in S2N to use consistent language throughout the application.|
|2014-08-23 09:05:37||Tab 3: Data Types||No way to add multiple sampling instruments for a given variable. For example, I have a sea ice fraction variable that uses both SMMR and SSMI data. Could only add one of those.||Thank you for your comments. We are considering how to address this for a future release.|
|2014-08-23 09:07:53||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Why don't we ask for platform information at the individual datatype level but do ask for instrument at that level? Maybe instruments need to be moved up to the same place where we ask for platforms?||Thank you for your comments. We are considering how to address this for a future release.|
|2014-08-23 09:24:24||Tab 5: Upload & Submit||Got an error when hitting the submit button: XMLHttpRequest Error|
We are unable to process your request this time. Please try again later. But it seemed to proceed anyway and I got the confirmation email and screen.
|Thank you for your comments. We have made several improvements to our software to address issues like this. Be sure to let us know if you continue to see errors of this nature.|
|2014-08-23 09:24:56||Creating a new account/Edit Profile||Was flawless and took less than one minute to create and account.||Thank you for your comments. We are glad it worked so well as it was our goal to make entry into S2N nearly effortless.|
|2014-08-23 09:25:38||Others||Took 33 minutes to create a real package, including the time to do some research to get the proper metadata.||Thank you for your comments. Your time to create a real package matches what we've seen in other testing, and we hope future packages take substantially less than 30 minutes with the use of the "copy" function and being able to build on your greater experience with the system.|
|2014-08-29 00:00:00||Confirmation Email||If one doesn't put a Title (Mr., Mrs., Dr, etc...) then the system only grabs the last name and addresses the person by that. For example, my confir. email addressed me as Dear Allegra. Grab the first name to be safe, so that it addresses me as Dear Andrew Allegra. Or require one to pick a title.||Thank you for your comments. We have made several improvements to our software to address issues like this.|
|2014-09-02 15:04:47||Creating a new account/Edit Profile||Password field is too long and complicated. I could only remember it if I wrote it down so I just gave up.||Thank you for your comments. Password complexity requirements are mandated by our parent organization, the US Department of Commerce. We have no flexibility in simplifying them.|
|2014-09-02 15:55:34||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||The Platform Name is supposed to come from a list (as are many other items on these forms), but your too-fancy system doesn't offer a drop down list of suggestions (e.g., a down arrow). And when I start typing and it shows a list of options, the list scrolls below the bottom of the screen. I pushed the document up as far as it would go (not very) but I can still only see ~12 options. |
Since your system uses this system for drop down lists, I suspect this problem is wide-spread.
|Thank you for your comments. We have not been able to reproduce this problem in testing on multiple browsers, but think it may be a browser issue. We have made many improvements to the S2N code to address browser differences and we believe this problem is resolved.|
|2014-09-02 15:56:57||Creating new submission packages||Is there a way to automate the submissions, or must a human type info into these forms every time?||Thank you for your comments. S2N was designed to allow an individual to describe and submit data files on an as-needed basis. We added the 'copy a record' function to support reusing previously-entered information. We will consider how it may be possible to make this process support a machine-to-machine usage paradigm for a future release.|
|2014-09-02 16:19:51||Tab 5: Upload & Submit||I have thousands of imagery files to upload, so I will have to compress them and zip them.||Thank you for your comments. In general, a zip file containing numerous files is perfectly acceptable. If the file grows too large, however, problems may arise. Testing suggests a threshold of about 2 GB, above which you should select the "I will provide some or all data files separately" option and we will contact you to arrange transfer of the large volume file. We have added language to the Data Upload and Submit tab explaining this approximate threshold.|
|2014-09-02 16:21:51||Tab 4: Package description||It is a pain to enter an abstract and purpose for every dataset. I have lots of datasets to archive with NODC.||Thank you for your comments. The abstract is broadly considered to be an important part of a data submission and is a required part of the submission package. We have added a 'copy' function which should make it easier for you to provide abstracts for many, similar submissions. Many cataloging and discovery systems feature the abstract prominently in both the search process and in showing search results to the user, so we do require the abstract to be present and encourage you to provide one that is accurate and complete.|
|2014-09-02 16:31:23||Review link (ISO generation)||Error message pops up:|
We are unable to process your request this time. Please try again later."
(should it say "AT this time"?)
When I click ok on the error message it takes me back to s2n homepage and I was not able to review submission. I also got the same error message on the previous page.
|Thank you for your comments. We have made several improvements to our software to address issues like this. We believe this problem has been resolved, but be sure to let us know if you continue to see errors of this nature.|
|2014-09-02 19:25:21||Tab 3: Data Types||I found non essential fields for both sampling and analysis and quality assurance cam up with error when I entered the following informative content. Empty fields were the only option available fshould I wish to continue.|

|2014-09-02 19:26:01||Creating new submission packages||Time-out was too soon when working on first entry||Thank you for your comments. We have modified S2N code to address this issue. We will monitor this issue and will revisit at a later date if this continues to be a problem.|
|2014-09-02 19:36:57||Tab 4: Package description||Entry of some licensing information would be essential for CSIRO data - our data is released on Creative Commons by Attribution.||Thank you for your comments. Please see the S2N User Agreement (https://www.nodc.noaa.gov/s2n/user_agreement.html) for guidance about data submissions using S2N. We may need to work individually to resolve issues related to licensing entities.|
|2014-09-02 22:17:57||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||Role List only has 'Collaborator', 'Primary Point of Contact' and 'Principal Investigator' but there could be more roles such as e.g 'custodian' or 'distributor'. Perhaps look at the ISO19115 CI_RoleCode codelist for some|
roles to use.
|Thank you for your comments. We are considering how to address this for a future release. By default, NCEI will have the role of distributor and custodian if the submission package is archived.|
|2014-09-02 22:26:58||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||I took me about 40 minutes to create an account and upload a submission. However this was quicker for me as I already knew metadata about the time period, bounding box, abstract and data quality control method.|
It would have taken me longer if I hadn't known these metadata beforehand. It may worthwhile to advise submitters to prepare these metadata items i.e. time period, bounding box, abstract beforehand. This would make filling out the form more efficient and accurate especially with regards time period and bounding box.
|Thank you for your comments. A summary of the information needed is provided in the Help section. In addition, we will reassess our introductory language regarding the time to gather and enter information as we improve our understanding of the information preparation process using S2N.|
|2014-09-02 22:31:14||Tab 3: Data Types||Observation Category' only has 'laboratory analysis', 'model output', 'satellite' and 'other'. Would be good to include 'in-situ' or 'observed'.||Thank you for your comments. We added an additional choice, 'in situ', to this dropdown box.|
|2014-09-03 00:02:12||Review link (ISO generation)||While the metadata review and XML versions of the metadata are easy to read and follow, the ISO metadata view is a bit hard to follow WRT the indenting. Can this be improved to make it visually easier to follow?||Thank you for your comments. We will consider improvements in future releases.|
|2014-09-03 00:05:26||Tab 3: Data Types||With units selection, is there any way to reduce the number of duplicated accepted values? For example I was entering in temperature data in degrees Celcius, and there were lots of valid options (degrees Celsius, degrees C, degreesC, degs C etc).||Thank you for your comments. The auto-complete function for units is tied to the UDUNITS (http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/udunits/) convention. We are exploring how to shorten the list of matched terms for future releases of S2N.|
|2014-09-03 00:17:38||Tab 5: Upload & Submit||Is there a file size limit for uploading file(s) at this point? If so, this should be specified so it is known whether an alternative method of sending data is required (e.g. FTP).||Thank you for your comments. Our testing suggests a threshold of about 2 GB for the maximum size of a single file. For files bigger than 2 GB, you should select the "I will provide some or all data files separately" option. We will contact you to arrange transfer of the large volume file(s). We have added language to the Data Upload and Submit tab explaining this approximate threshold.|

Data submission went through okay, after re-logging into my account it appeared under "Submission packages NODC is working on".
|Thank you for your comments. We have made several improvements to our software to address issues like this. Let us know if you continue to see this problem in the operational S2N system.|
|2014-09-03 00:29:04||Confirmation email||Received 2 of the same email (exact duplicate received at the exact same time).|
Also in email, the Dear firstName lastName only showed lastName. For example, if John Smith was entered as the name in the submission, the email would read "Dear Smith" (including the extra space).
|Thank you for your comments. We have made several improvements to our software to address issues like this.|
|2014-09-03 00:32:32||My submission packages (table view)||In the paragraph about submission packages NODC are working on, the email link to NODC.DataOfficer@noaa.gov produces an error. Link does not say mailto:NODC.DataOfficer@noaa.gov but rather a https NODC link.|
|2014-09-03 00:35:50||Creating a new account/Edit Profile||Spelling mistake under the "Institution List" help section on Edit Profile page: |
"...You may select your institution from the drow down list. ..." should be drop down list.
|2014-09-03 06:24:14||Tab 3: Data Types||I created a sample package with the intent of describing modelled fields. I did not supply a platform, so the title is shown as below:|
SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE collected from [PLATFORMS] in NORTHWEST ATLANTIC from 2011-01-01 to 2012-12-12
It seems to me that you should be delinieating model data packages earlier in the submission process and generating a dataset title which reflects this.
|Thank you for your comments. For cases where no platform is provided, we have removed "from [PLATFORM]" from the automated title generation. We have also added text to the automated title generation for submissions that consist of model data types only, or laboratory analyses only.|
|2014-09-03 06:27:47||Tab 4: Package description||It would be useful to provide additional supporting help for the descriptive fields (sample citation formats for the Reference field, descriptions of the other fields based upon the ISO 19115 spec, etc).||Thank you for your comments. We will consider improvements to the Help section text for future releases.|
|2014-09-03 06:31:01||Confirmation email||I am running Google Chrome on Windows 7 x64 Enterprise.|
After submitting the package, a pop-up stating that I would receive a confirmation message was displayed.
I received the confirmation e-mail, but then I suddenly noticed another popup stating:
We are unable to process your request. Please try again later.
There may be a firewall issue with the data upload, so I will need someone to confirm whether or not a single NetCDF file was submitted.
|2014-09-03 06:38:40||Others||I was wondering if you could provide some background related to the thesauri you are using in generating the ISO XML metadata. |
From what I can tell on submission, these lists do not appear to be managed, so will you be changing these entries to refer to a thesaurus that you are maintaining yourselves, or will you be cleaning up the submitted keywords, platforms, etc. as the data is submitted?
The structure of the metadata looks fine, I just want to understand how you will keep the keywords from becoming an unusable mess.
|Thank you for your comments. The thesauri (controlled vocabularies) used for datatypes, institutions, seanames and other descriptive terms are internally created and maintained by NCEI (formerly, NODC). The platforms vocabulary is coordinated with the ICES program office and unit of measure terms are from Unidata-UDUNITS.|
Selections made from a drop-down list are mapped to specific terms in a corresponding NODC vocabulary, but an S2N user may also enter free text. These two types of entries will be encoded differently in the ISO metadata created by S2N.
For the initial implementation, NODC staff will review all entries and may map synonymous entries to authorized terms as part of the ingest process. Otherwise, user-generated keywords will be maintained separately from NODC-generated keywords.
|2014-09-03 09:38:43||Confirmation email||Reference ID: GTJ3PF|
I received an error message saying my data submission could not be uploaded and at the same time received a positive confirmation email - that submission was uploaded successfully.
|2014-09-03 09:58:04||Others||It is not clear what type of data you are expecting to receive and what the purpose of the archive is. Is this intended to provide a easy interface for data types that are already typically submitted, with 'standard' formatting and vocabularies? Or is this archive capable of ingesting disparate data and data from new technologies and sensors? Suggest pointing the user to the submission guidelines webpage to explain these aspects of the database/archive.||Thank you for your comments. We have revised the Submit Data web page at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/submit/submit-guide.html to provide more information about the scope of archival holdings.|
|2014-09-03 14:55:02||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Nice to have would be a calendar to pick the dates.||Thank you for your comment. We will consider adding this feature in a future release.|

|2014-09-03 15:05:28||Review link (ISO generation)||This is the output date for the data citation <gmd:date gco:nilReason="unknown"/> |
Will this get updated later as a publication date?
|Thank you for your comments. The ISO record in the submission package will not be updated. If the package is archived, that field in the ISO record for the archived data will contain the publication date.|
|2014-09-03 15:24:23||Tab 4: Package description||Information entered into "references" goes into LI_Lineage.statement. This has the potential to be a whole lot of disparate information, and seems like it may be difficult to parse it out into other tags. You may want to have some sort of boilerplate statement upfront to describe where this information was obtained.||Thank you for your comments. We are using this feedback to improve future versions of S2N and rely on experts like you to help us improve the xml that is behind the web interface.|
|2014-09-03 15:29:11||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||General comment on forms: I found it a bit distracting to have all the Save buttons to be different. We have revised our guidance in the system to include a caution about large files. Testing suggests a threshold of about 2 GB, above which you should select the "I will provide some or all data files separately" option and we will contact you to arrange transfer of the large volume file.|
|2014-09-04 09:06:30||Review link (ISO generation)||I was wondering if there were any plans to develop formal citations for the thesauri used in the ISO metadata records.|
I know the GCMD has done this with the Global Change Master Directory Science keywords and this looks much cleaner than having a mostly empty citation.
|Thank you for your comments. We are developing the appropriate citation information to insert into the ISO metadata record constructed by S2N to more definitively cite the thesaurus used and also to distinguish User-provided keywords and user-defined thesauri.|
|2014-09-05 11:15:59||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Should the map datum/projection information be provided along the coordinates? Should be WGS84. |
Just a thought.
|Thank you for your comments. We are considering how to capture this information to improve future versions of S2N.|
|2014-09-08 18:34:01||Tab 3: Data Types||- For "parameter and variable" I wanted to put Concentration of Sr, but it didn't show up on the drop down menu containing the suggestions. If you are trying to make this uniform, it may be a good idea to let users see all of their choices of inputs into this space.|
- "Data Quality Method" is vague. I wasn't sure what value to put in and I'm not sure I'd be able to interpret other user's input there. I tried to write a description of our QA/QC procedures, but it wouldn't accept it. If i just wrote "2%" it seemed to work.
- Describing one data type at a time might take a long time if one was trying to upload a multi-variable dataset.
|Thank you for your comments. There are always development tradeoffs in user interaction models. We will consider alternate ways of presenting choices that may improve future versions of S2N.|
|2014-09-08 18:38:00||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||It says I need a Southern Boundary. I put in a Southern Boundary the first time I went through that page and tried putting it back in there, but it is not saving it.|
I just put in the ocean region and saved that and it seemed to remember the Southern Boundary input after that. Not sure what happened there.

The time it took to submit a submission package was ~25 minutes.
|Thank you for your comments. We appreciate the detailed information on the timing as it helps us to fine tune and improve the overall process.|
|2014-09-08 18:49:18||Others||I didn't get a chance to see how the data will be presented when downloading it from the database, but I've had some less-than-ideal experiences with other databases that would be great if you could avoid.|
Can you make sure that data from the same samples can show up on the same line even if the measurements were performed on different instruments? For example, if sample XX had Mn concentrations measured on an ICP-ES and Nitrate measured on a spectrophotometer, can you make sure that all the data for sample XX is reported on one line?
Other databases will put measurements of that sample from one instrument on a separate line from measurements of the same sample on a different instrument. It makes working with large datasets very difficult. Maybe you've already thought of this, in which case this point is irrelevant, but I thought I'd check!
Hope you have a great day.
|Thank you for your comments. While your submitted data may be ingested into value-added data products or databases at NCEI, the current standard archival practice is to retain and distribute an exact copy of data in the format in which it was submitted.|

|2014-09-15 19:42:31||Creating new submission packages||We manage the Global Tropical Moored Buoy Array system, formerly known as TAO/TRITON/PIRATA/RAMA. The various web forms in Send2NODC to initiate a data submission are not compatible with our data organization, which is by array site, rather than by deployment or cruise. Every array site has multiple deployments, instruments, varying depths and heights, and so, its impractical for us to use a system like this to submit data. For the foreseeable future, it would be best for NODC to continue to get data from our web or FTP sites to update the NODC catalog.||Thank you for your comments. We agree that S2N may not be suitable for every type of data submission scenario and look forward to working with you to improve the acquisition of data from your program.|

|2014-09-16 14:08:40||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||I would kindly suggest that you please provide a map view of any and all georeferencing that a user enters. This will prevent many mistakes in georeferencing that will otherwise make it past the form and into a database or XML record.|
This request stems from my experience working on the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site Survey Data Bank. The IODP required scientists to enter georeferencing for the files they were uploading to the site. We required decimal degrees and bounds of -90 <= lat <= 90, and -180 <= lon < 180. We found that at least 1 out of 6 scientists would mess up the lat/lon information during each submission cycle (two per year). The Australians and New Zealanders tended to drop the minus sign from their latitudes. Some scientists would mix up lat and lon. And still others (US West Coasters) would drop the minus sign from their longitudes.
With bounding boxes, a common error is swapping the Eastern and Western bounds. For grins, I tested your form with the following cases with these results:
1. W = 160, E = -170. Form complains that box crosses the dateline. (This is a reasonable box width, so probably does represent the correct EW bounds. Also, the international dateline is not a meridian line. It jogs around islands and such. For bounding boxes, it's more correct to refer to the 180-degree meridian.)
2. W = -160, E = -170. Form complains that box crosses the dateline. (Yes, that's true, but more importantly, the box wraps nearly around the globe, crossing the prime meridian too. Most likely a user error.)
3. W = -170, E = 160. (No form complaint, despite the fact that this box wraps nearly around the globe, crossing the prime meridian, but not the 180-degree meridian.)
The usual validation approach of checking to see if the input was a number between the appropriate bounds did not catch these types of errors (especially the missing minus sign problem). Our solution, which worked pretty well, was to provide a map view of the coordinates that the scientist entered, so they could get a reality check before submitting the form.
|Thank you for your comments. We are looking at ways to make the user interaction model more visually oriented for this type of validation.|

The required information was appropriate and easy to provide. Also, the instructions and sidebar tips were clear and helpful.||Thank you for your comments. We appreciate positive feedback as it helps confirm some of the choices we've made in S2N.|
|2014-10-08 16:09:53||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||The role list seems a bit limited. In the case I am testing, I am uploading a dataset as a data manager for a project data center. So I am neither the PI or a collaborator. I used Primary Point of Contact, though that too does not fit well because once NODC has the data, if they have questions, the originator that provided the data to our project data center may be a better contact. This list may need to be expanded. Also, would be good to provide examples/clarifications for each option on the list in the side bar help.||Thank you for your comments. We are considering what additional roles to include, based on ISO roleCode choices.|
|2014-10-08 16:24:06||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Ships or Platforms used - When typing a ship name here - in my case the Bellows operating out of University of South FL, is there any way to verify the origin of the Bellows (NODC code 318B) that pops up to ensure the platforms are one in the same. Or do you expect if the user is not certain that they will not select from the pop-up list.||Thank you for your comments. We are looking at ways to improve the controlled vocabularies to make them easier to use.|
|2014-10-08 16:43:14||Tab 5: Upload & Submit||It is very tedious to have to individual select files to be uploaded. It would be better to be able to select multiple files from my desktop at one time. Otherwise I need to tar or zip the files into a single package for upload. Note: I was using Safari 6.1.6 on Mac OS 10.7.5. Maybe multiselect works for other browsers or operating systems.||Thank you for your comments. We are working on making the standard Control-Click and Shift-Click keyboard shortcuts functional in all browsers for a future release.|
|2014-10-08 16:46:43||Others||Overall the S2N works very well. Simple and clear instructions (though some minor additions needed). Uploading a dataset took about 20 mins, but would likely be faster one one was familiar with the forms and had more of the variable/units information handy (not hopping back and forth to the files like I was).||Thank you for your comments. The details you have provided are helpful in our efforts to improve S2N.|
|2014-10-08 16:48:09||Creating a new account/Edit Profile||Not clear to me why Institution and Phone Number fields are not populated when I view my profile (Edit Profile tab). I know I filled these out when I created my account (they were required).|
|2014-10-08 16:52:32||Creating new submission packages||I noted in several places where I would have liked more "help" information. I just noticed the detailed Help button on the upper right side by Edit Profile. It would be nice if there was a direct link to the appropriate section of the Help next to each major heading. For example, a help icon to the right of "Responsible Persons" or maybe even a link next to each field in the form (e.g., next to Role). This would make the interface more user friendly.||Thank you for your comments. We have included some internal navigation in the text for the public release and will consider how to improve it in future releases.|
|2014-10-13 17:58:15||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||It would be nice to move the "Suggested Author List" from the Package Description Tab to the Responsible Persons/Projects Tab. |
Another thing is that if we collect these two pieces of information separately, there is a risk the Suggested Author List will contain more or fewer authors than those in the Responsible Persons list. CDIAC already has that problem.
Alternatively, we could consider to add a dropdown menu of "Author order" to each Responsible Person section, allowing data providers to select choices like 1st author, 2nd author, 3rd author, etc. That will eliminate the need to collect a separate "Suggested Author List" element, and make these two items consistent with each other.
|Thank you for your comments. We will consider these suggestions for a future release.|
|2014-10-13 19:35:17||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||Below are some of my comments on the "Role" of each Responsible person:|
First of all, they do not cover all the roles a user may want to use.
Second, multiple choices often apply. For example, a person could be a PI, and at the same time a primary point of contact. Similarly, a person could be a PI, and at the same time a collaborator.
I think one way to make our life easier is to only care about three roles in a data set:
- Custodian --- NODC,
- Resource provider --- data provider, and
- Principal investigator --- authors of the data set.
That is, do not worry about the minutiae different roles among the authors, and treat them all as PIs. After all, the different contributions of each authors to the data set will often not made public, except that they are reflected in the order of the authors.
Then we can completely eliminate the need to collect the "roles", because we can program them easily. That will reduce confusions for the S2N users.
|Thank you for your comments. We have received numerous comments regarding the list of roles, the management of roles in the application, and the relationship between the list of persons, their roles, and the list of authors requested in another part of the application. We will need to revisit all of this and consider how to improve the application in a future release.|
|2014-10-13 19:40:24||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||Funding Agency:|
I remember someone mentioned the need for another field to hold "funding identification" information. We can probably do it easily by making the Funding Agency interface similar to the one for Responsible Persons. That way, for each Funding Agency added, there will be an optional field for its Funding ID.
|Thank you for your comment. We will investigate how to clearly differentiate the different roles performed by organizations, which can be similar to the different roles performed by individuals, for a future release of S2N.|
|2014-10-13 19:44:01||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||We basically did not provide a definition for "Projects".|
Maybe something like this?
Project refers to a collaborative research effort that is carefully planned and designed to achieve a particular research goal. Examples include Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR), U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (U.S. JGOFS), etc.
|Thank you for your comment. Our Help text defines a project as "Projects are considered by NCEI to be relatively large-scale activities that may encompass multiple people, organizations, platforms, and |
funding sources." We will consider how to make this definition more useful in a future release.
|2014-10-13 19:48:20||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||"Sea Areas or Regions":|
Should we call it "Geographic Areas or Regions" instead. If people collect their samples from a river estuary, or a lagoon, we would still take their data, do we? This is true, especially in the NCEI environment.
|Thank you for your comment. We will consider how to be more inclusive and to identify spatial area names more accurately in a future release.|
|2014-10-13 19:52:24||Tab 3: Data Types||I recommend to replace "Data Quality Method" with "Data Quality Info". They are very different from each other. |
For example, if I estimate the uncertainty by randomly taking duplicate samples, and then calculate their standard deviation. The Data Quality Method in this case will be something like "standard deviation". The Data Quality Info could be the results, e.g., 0.5%.
|Thank you for your comment. We will consider how to more effectively capture relevant information about data quality in a future release of S2N as we review input from S2N users and understand their requirements for this information more fully.|
|2014-10-13 20:03:00||Others||Should we list the NODC User Service team's phone number and email address in the Help documentation, in case some data provider needs instant help from a representative?||Thank you for your comment. We are considering the best way to provide additional assistance to S2N users in future releases.|
|2014-10-13 20:07:16||Creating a new account/Edit Profile||The fields of both First name and Last name have their inputs, but the text boxes of these two fields are in red. When the requirements are met, the text boxes should be in black I think.||Thank you for your comments. We will use your comments to improve S2N for all users in the future.|
|2014-10-13 20:09:47||Creating a new account/Edit Profile||We talked about this before, but a user can not change their email address? Sometimes, people change their jobs, and their work emails are changed.||Thank you for your comments. Because S2N uses email address as the user ID, it is currently necessary to require a new account to be created if a new email address is necessary. We are considering how this may be changed for a future release.|
|2014-10-13 21:39:29||Tab 5: Upload & Submit||Never finishes uploading a not huge Excel file.||Thank you for your comments. We have improved the stability of the file upload process, so if you continue to experience problems uploading small files please be sure to let us know.|
|2014-10-14 11:58:40||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Regarding auto-generated names: not all of the inputs to that process are required (specifically the SEA NAMES (or "Sea Areas or Regions") so the generated name is a little odd.|
TEMPERATURE - SURFACE WATER [SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE] collected from HYDROGRAF in [SEA NAMES] from 2013-04-01 to 2013-06-28
I am not sure how to interpret that as a user looking for data.
|Thank you for your comments. We've updated the code that generates the title to not include |
references to optional information (like platforms and sea areas) when that information is not supplied.
We've also adjusted the title generation algorithm to include only corresponding authorized vocabulary terms,
even if you have selected a synonym from the auto-complete "Parameter or Variable" list and updated text in the Help section to better explain this situation.
|2014-10-14 12:16:20||My submission packages (table view)||The language shifts from "data package" to "submission package".||Thank you for your comment. We have updated the Help text to be more consistent when referring to the same concepts.|
|2014-10-14 16:01:26||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Is the S2N designed as well for submitting ongoing real-time data stream, which doesn't have an end date?||Thank you for your question. S2N is designed primarily for datasets with a defined start and end date. For ongoing data streams, we prefer to establish automated archive procedures in negotiation with the data producer.|
|2014-10-14 16:01:26||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||How to enter a data set that covers a region across 180E, say 170 at the west boundary and -180 at the east boundary?||Thank you for your question. You can enter bounding coordinates that cross the dateline, for example, a western bounding coordinate of 170 degrees East, and an eastern bounding coordinate of 170 degrees West (-170). If such a situation is detected, S2N will ask you for confirmation.|
|2014-10-14 16:02:41||Tab 3: Data Types||Does satellite SST considered as measured or calculated? Satellite SST is calculated from sensor radiance data that is actually measured and will not be altered once it is received. Any SST data set can be reprocessed, i.e., regenerated from the source sensor data.|
If a dataset contains both measured and calculated data, how to enter?
|Thank you for your comments. We consider this a measured parameter. Data types that are computed based on measured parameters are considered "calculated".|
|2014-10-14 16:04:06||Tab 5: Upload & Submit||How to submit for a historical dataset or ongoing near-real-time/real-time data stream that requires NODC to pull the data from ftp site, etc.? It is not clear on the website. I think need to provide instructions on this type of data in the description on the page.||Thank you for your question. S2N is designed primarily for datasets with a defined start and end date. For ongoing data streams, we prefer to establish automated archive procedures in negotiation with the data producer.|
Please contact NODC.DataOfficer@noaa.gov if you would like to explore establishing an automated archival submission process.
|2014-10-22 14:09:23||Tab 1: Responsible Persons/Projects||NCRMP should have (NOAA - Coral Reef Conservation Program) attached to it's name.||Thank you for your comments. We have updated our Projects vocabulary for this project to include the funding organization, Coral Reef Conservation Program.|
|2014-10-22 14:09:59||Tab 2: Dates & Locations||Is there a way a novice user could browse the data and observation types to make sure they select the most appropriate one?||Thank you for your comment. In the public release version, we have implemented an auto-complete function that will find terms in accordance with what is typed, which we hope will help users find an existing relevant term. We are considering the best way to provide additional assistance to S2N users in future releases.|

We will be revising the language and structure of this page in the near future and may include publishing it as a PDF.|
|unknown||Others||Need to define “principal investigator “ I don’t think all data submitters will qualify, if it is defined in the usual way. For example, I’m going to submit Project Birdseye aerial photographs from the 1970s. These were collected in a data rescue project. It was a Navy project. I’m the informal PI of the project to collect these data, but there was no single agency funded PI who collected them. |
(Oh I see , as I get into it, and its fine as is)
Except that - ,
Will a citation be developed for each data set, with a DOI? If so, and if the entered “PI” will be used to make this, it matters a great deal how PI is defined. Best of all would be if NODC would correspond with the data provider and construct a good citation for their data set with their input, then get it a DOI.
|Thank you for your comments. |
S2N uses ISO 19115-2 roleCode definitions, for example, PI is defined as "key party responsible for gathering information and conducting research".
NCEI does not currently issue a DOI for each archived information package, but corresponds with the appropriate Point of Contact (outside the context of S2N) if a DOI is requested.
|unknown||Others||Is versioning addressed somewhere? - Note: further emails with Florence on this subject suggest that we might consider asking a user if this submission is an updated version of a previous accession or something entirely new. Further, Florence wrote: "In the users guide for making these data submissions, I guess you just want to anticipate any questions about versions that the user may have, and answer them as best as possible. "||Thank you for your comments. Version control is not directly addressed in S2N, but a data provider may indicate in the Comments field on the Upload & Submit tab that the submission package contains a new version of existing archival data. If that is the case, providing the previously archived data's accession number can be useful.|
|unknown||Others||The sections below make it sound as if only numbers or text, not images, are acceptable. Might be good to state this earlier in the guidelines.|
6. Data Submission Format
Well documented data are acceptable in non-NODC format, if in ASCII form. Prior discussions with an NODC data specialist are essential to ensure an acceptable format. NODC standard formats (written in ASCII) are available on NODC Web site if you choose to put the data in one of those formats.
NODC also provides an anonymous public area reserved for electronic transmission of data over Internet via FTP. See the FTP Guidelines
At the present time, NODC accepts expendable bathythermograph (XBT) strip charts. These temperature/depth couplets are digitized by commercial contractors. However, submission of strip charts and other analog records is not encouraged if digital data are available.
7. Unusual Data Submissions
If an investigator wishes to submit data of a type or medium not normally acquired by NODC, please make arrangements with NODC prior to submission. Within the limits imposed by available resources and NODC mission, NODC will accommodate data of special interest. If the data warrant such action, capabilities to handle them will be developed.
|Thank you for your comments. Some NCEI archival file management systems are 'format agnostic', by which we mean that the file management systems can store many diverse types of digital content if that content is properly documented. We will be updating the language on our website to better explain the scope of our archival holdings, recommended formats, and other services in the near future.|
