PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, meteorological, physical, profile and underway - surface data collected from METEOR in the South Atlantic Ocean from 1992-12-27 to 1993-01-31 and retrieved during cruise 06MT22_5 and WOCE_A10. These data include ALKALINITY, BAROMETRIC PRESSURE, CARBON DIOXIDE - AIR, CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), DELTA CARBON-14, DELTA HELIUM-3, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, Delta Oxygen - 18, HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NEON, NITRATE + NITRITE CONTENT (CONCENTRATION), PHOSPHATE, Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE, SILICATE, Tritium (Hydrogen isotope), WATER TEMPERATURE and pH. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD, Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer, Shower head chamber equilibrator for autonomous carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement and bottle. These data were collected by Douglas Wallace of Universitat Kiel; Institut Fur Meereskunde; Forschungsbereich Marine Biogeochemie and Kenneth Johnson [affiliation unknown] as part of the WOCE A10 and WOCE_A10 data set. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: The system precision data are given in Table 2. For these data, within-sample precision is the average absolute difference between two replicates analyzed from the same sample bottle, between-sample precision is the average absolute difference between duplicate sample bottles taken from the same Niskin bottle, and between-Niskin precision is the average absolute difference of analyses of samples taken from two Niskin bottles that were closed at the same depth. The IfMK group assessed instrument-specific precision by periodically running two replicates from the same bottle (within-sample), whereas precision on the BNL system was assessed by running one replicate from each of two sample bottles filled from the same Niskin bottle (between-sample). The pooled standard deviation (Sp2) is the square root of the pooled variance from the between-samples replicates (n = 2) according to Youden (1951):
CRM batch number: 7 11
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: Gran
Cell type (open or closed): Closed
Curve fitting method: The titration cell was based on the systems described by Bradshaw and Brewer (1988) and Millero et al. (1993). The potential was followed with an electrode pair consisting of a ROSS (Orion Inc.) glass pH electrode and a ROSS AgCl reference electrode connected to a high precision digital voltmeter. The titration was controlled by a computer that waited for stable emf-readings before adding the next acid increment
Uncertainty: The precision of the method was ±2.0 μmol/kg as determined by replicate analyses of samples.
