PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from NOAA Ship DISCOVERER in the South Pacific Ocean, Southern Oceans (> 60 degrees South) and Tasman Sea from 1996-01-05 to 1996-03-10. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-113 (CFC-113), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), DELTA CARBON-13, DELTA CARBON-14, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, Dissolved Organic Nitrogen, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide - water, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA), WATER TEMPERATURE, pH, phosphate and silicate. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle.
These data were collected by Frank J. Millero of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Rik Wanninkhof of NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, Richard A. Feely of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and Andrew Dickson of University of California - San Diego; Scripps Institution of Oceanography as part of the WOCE_P14SP15S data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: WOCE_P14SP15S
The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.
CITE AS: Feely, Richard A.; Millero, Frank J.; Dickson, Andrew G.; Wanninkhof, Rik (2013). Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, dissolved inorganic carbon, pH, alkalinity, temperature, salinity and other variables collected from discrete sample and profile observations using CTD, bottle and other instruments from NOAA Ship DISCOVERER in the South Pacific Ocean, Southern Oceans and Tasman Sea from 1996-01-05 to 1996-03-10 (NCEI Accession 0115155). Replicate information: |
Replicate measurements from different PVC bottles tripped at the same depth, along with replicate measurements from the same PVC bottle was within +/-1.9 μmol/kg DIC. |
Standardization description: |
Samples were drawn from the PVC bottles into cleaned, precombusted 500-mL Pyrex(tm) bottles using Tygon(tm) tubing according to procedures outlined in the Handbook of Methods for CO2 Analysis (DOE, 1994). Bottles were rinsed once and filled from the bottom, overflowing half a volume, and care was taken not to entrain any bubbles. The tube was pinched off and withdrawn, creating a 5-mL headspace, and 0.2 mL of saturated HgCl2 solution was added as a preservative. |

Cell type (open or closed): |
Open |
Uncertainty: |
The volume of HCl delivered to the cell is traditionally assumed to have a small uncertainty (Dickson, 1981) and is equated with the digital output of the titrator. Calibrations of the Dosimat(tm) burettes with Milli Q(tm) water at 25C indicated that the systems deliver 3.000 mL (the value for a titration of seawater) to a precision of 0.0004 mL. This uncertainty resulted in an error of 0.4 μmol/kg in TA. |

Detailed sampling and analyzing information: |
Seawater pH was measured using a three-wavelength spectrophotometric procedure (Byrne, 1987) and the indicator calibration of Clayton and Byrne (1993). The indicator was a 8.0-mM solution of Kodak(tm) m-cresol purple sodium salt (C21H17O5Na) in a 10% ethanol solution; the absorbance ratio of the concentrated indicator solution (RI = 578A/434A) was 1.00. All absorbance ratio measurements were obtained in the thermostatted (25.0 +/- 0.05°C) cell compartments of HP 8453 diode array spectrophotometers. Periodically the spectrophotometric cells were cleaned with a 1 N HCl solution to preclude biological growth. |
