PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from METEOR in the South Atlantic Ocean from 1991-02-10 to 1991-03-23 and retrieved during cruise WOCE_A09. These data include ALKALINITY, CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-113 (CFC-113), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), DELTA CARBON-14, DELTA HELIUM-3, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NEON, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, Tritium (Hydrogen isotope) and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Douglas Wallace of Universitat Kiel; Institut Fur Meereskunde; Forschungsbereich Marine Biogeochemie and Kenneth Johnson [affiliation unknown] as part of the WOCE_A09 data set. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: Replicate samples from ten Niskin bottles at four stations were also collected for later shore- based reference analyses of TCO2 by vacuum extraction and manometry by Charles D. Keeling, SIO. The results (Table 2 in the report), extracted from Guenther et al. (1994), were obtained very early in the program for comparing shipboard analyses by coulometry with shore-based analyses of duplicate samples, and many mistakes and false starts were noted.
CRM batch number: No.2 1978.8 μmol/kg
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: potentiometric titration
Cell type (open or closed): Closed
Curve fitting method: a method derived from one first described by Dyrssen (1965) and later modified by Bradshaw et al. (1981) was used.
Uncertainty: The precision of the measurements was estimated to be better than 0.1%. The samples were likely exposed to relatively high temperatures during shipment from Brazil to Woods Hole. Some sample bottles were also broken during shipment. Overall precision of the data set was therefore slightly degraded from that expected from measurement error alone. The pooled standard deviation for ten replicate samples was ~0.12%.

pCO2 (fCO2) discrete
Abbreviation: fCO2
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Seawater volume: 60-mL
Headspace volume: 5-mL
Temperature of measurement: 20 degree C
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: pCO2 was measured using an experimental analytical system employing a batch-equilibration, static headspace analysis technique, with detection by gas chromatography and a flame ionization detector. and Briefly, the technique used was based on the static headspace methane method of Johnson et al. (1990).
Uncertainty: Precision varied throughout the cruise, depending primarily on the status of the catalyst, that had to be reconditioned periodically. Precision on multiple (>3) replicates varied from 0.4 to ~6% and averaged 2%. Accuracy was judged in three ways. First, throughout the cruise the mole fraction of CO2 in air was measured; air was collected in syringes at the bow of the ship during steaming between stations.
