Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, dissolved inorganic carbon, temperature, salinity and other variables collected from discrete sample and profile observations using CTD, bottle and other instruments from the METEOR in the South Atlantic Ocean and South Pacific Ocean from 1990-01-23 to 1990-03-08 (NCEI Accession 0115021)

Taro Takahashi - Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO)

PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from METEOR in the South Atlantic Ocean and South Pacific Ocean from 1990-01-23 to 1990-03-08 and retrieved during cruise WOCE_A21/A12. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DELTA HELIUM-3, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HELIUM, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NEON, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, Tritium (Hydrogen isotope) and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Taro Takahashi of Columbia University; Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory as part of the WOCE_A21/A12 data set. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The TCO2 concentration in seawater samples was determined by the use of a coulometric system, which was modified from that described by Johnson et al. (1985).
CRM batch number: No
pCO2 (fCO2) discrete
Abbreviation: fCO2
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Seawater volume: 45 mL
Temperature of measurement: 20 degree C
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: A fully automated equilibrator-gas chromatograph system was used during the expedition to determined the pCO2 exerted by the seawater samples.
Temperature correction method: thermostated water bath
Uncertainty: The overall precision of the pCO2 measurement is estimated to be about ~ 0.10%, based on the reproducibility of replicate equilibrations. Greater details on the pCO2 measurements are discussed in Chipman et al. (1992).
