PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset consists of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), alkalinity, temperature, salinity and other variables collected from discrete samples and profile observations during the R/V Marion Dufresne cruise 35MFCIVA_1 (EXPOCODE 35MF19930123) along the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) section P06S in the Indian Ocean from 1993-01-23 to 1993-03-09. These data include dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), alkalinity, temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), delta C14 and C14Error. These data were collected by Alain Poisson of Universite Pierre et Marie Curie; Laboratoire de Biogeochimie et Chimie Marines as part of the WOCE_I06S data set. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: To test the precision of the method, replicate samples were taken at all the stations.
Standardization description: The calibration of the method was made using sodium carbonate solutions prepared under nitrogen atmosphere whose concentrations were between 0 and 2200 μmole/kg.
CRM batch number: No30. Sal=33.420 TCO2=1988.78 TALK=2201.88
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: Single point titration
Curve fitting method: A potentiometric titration derived from the method developped by Edmond (1970) was used to estimate Total Inorganic Carbon (TCO2 p) and Total Alkalinity (TA p). The titration system was composed of a Radiometer ABU 80 burette, a Radiometer PHM80 pH meter and a PC/AT Tandon micro-computer to drive the burette and record the data.
Uncertainty: To test the precision of the method, replicate samples were taken at all the stations. Another way to estimate the precision of the measurements is to calculate the regression curve of TCO2 versus potential temperature in deep water. the calculation was made on the 460 samples whose temperature is between -0.8C and 0.4C; 14 data of TALK and 22 of TCO2 were rejected because very far from the regression curve. This is possibly due to bad samplings or any problem during the titration. The standard deviation was 2.4 ueq/kg for TALK and 3.7 μmol/kg for TCO2. Based on replicate samples accuracy was 0.9 (+/-0.8) μmol/kg for TALK (40 samples).
