PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes discrete sample and profile data collected from R/V Marion Dufresne cruise WOCE_I06Sb (EXPOCODE 35MF19960220) in the Indian and Southern Oceans from 1996-02-20 to 1996-03-31. These data include dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), alkalinity, temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), delta C14 and C14Error. These data were collected by Alain Poisson of Universite Pierre et Marie Curie; Laboratoire de Biogeochimie et Chimie Marines as part of the WOCE_I06S data set. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: For all 45 replicates, the mean difference was 3.1 (+/-3.5) μmol/kg for TCO2.
Standardization description: The acid (HCl, 0.1N) used for the titration was calibrate once or twice a day with the Certified Reference Material, CRM prepared by A. Dickson
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Curve fitting method: A potentiometric titration derived from the method developped by Edmond (1970) was used to estimate both TCO2 and TA. The titration system was composed of a burette (Radiometer ABU 80), a pH meter (Radiometer PHM80) and micro-computer to drive the burette and record the data. The titration curve was used as recommended in the US Department of Energy report (DOE, 1994) to determine TCO2 and TA concentrations.
Uncertainty: For all 45 replicates, the mean difference was 2.4 (+/-4.5) μmol/kg for TALK.
