PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from JOHN P. TULLY in the North Pacific Ocean, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and South Pacific Ocean from 1994-09-06 to 1994-11-10. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DELTA CARBON-13, DELTA CARBON-14, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), DISSOLVED OXYGEN, Delta Oxygen-18, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA), WATER TEMPERATURE, phosphate and silicate. The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement and bottle. These data were collected by C. S. Wong of Fisheries and Oceans Canada; Institute of Ocean Sciences as part of the WOCE_P15Na,b data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: WOCE_P15Na and b The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The coulometric procedure outlined in DOE (1994) was used to measure carbon dioxide in sea water. Samples were collected in 250 mL GS bottles, fixed with 200 ul of saturated HgCl2 solution, and cool stored until analyzed.
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: Metrohm 665, Metrohm 649 stir apparatus and an Orion model 720A pH meter
Cell type (open or closed): closed
Curve fitting method: Following the method of DOE (1994), alkalinity was determined using a temperature stable (25 C) closed titration cell, a Metrohm 665 Dosimat, a Metrohm 649 stir apparatus and an Orion model 720A pH meter.
