PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: Thia NCEI Accession includes discrete profile measurements of carbon dioxide, hydrographic and other chemical data obtained during the nine R/V Knorr cruises comprising the Indian Ocean CO2 Survey (WOCE Sections I8SI9S, I9N, I8NI5E, I3, I5WI4, I7N, I1, I10, and I2) from 1994-12-01 to 1996-01-22. These data include measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, CTD temperature, CTD salinity, CTD oxygen, bottle salinity, bottle oxygen, silicate, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12), delta C14, delta C13, C14 error and THETA. These data were collected by Kenneth Johnson of Brookhaven National Laboratory, Christopher D. Winn of Hawaii Pacific University, Robert M. Key of Princeton University; Department of Geosciences; Program in Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences, Frank J. Millero of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Christopher Sabine of Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, Douglas Wallace of Universitat Kiel; Institut Fur Meereskunde; Forschungsbereich Marine Biogeochemie and Catherine Goyet of University of Perpignan via Domitia; Institute of Modeling and Analysis of Geo-Environment and Health as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) Indian Ocean survey. The WOCE was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

Replicate information: |
Periodically, replicate samples were also drawn for shipboard analysis at sea using coulometry and for later analysis on shore at SIO by manometry. The latter samples, typically designated as the Keeling samples, consisted of two 500-mL replicate samples collected at two depths (four samples total per station). These were analyzed only if both replicates survived the storage and the return journey to SIO. |
