The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, bottle and spectrophotometer. These data were collected by Yrene M. Astor of Estacion de Investigaciones Marinas de Margarita and Frank E. Muller-Karger and Laura Lorenzoni of University of South Florida as part of the CARIACO_TS data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: CARIACO Time-Series The Global CO2 Time-series and Moorings Project involves international groups from 18 countries who have mounted sensors on moored buoys to provide high resolution time-series measurements of atmospheric boundary layer and surface ocean CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). The CO2 Time-series and Moorings Project is coordinated by UNESCO International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP).

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: CO2SYS program (Lewis, E., and D. W. R. Wallace. 1998), using Total Alkalinity and pH as input variables, Total pH scale, K1 K2 dissociation constants of Mehrbach refit by Dickson and Millero and KSO4 dissociation constant of Dickson.
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Curve fitting method: Seawater was acidified by a titration to the inflexion point using bromocresol green as indicator. CO2 was then purged from the sample by bubbling with nitrogen gas, and the acid excess was measured at 25 8C by spectrophotometer. Alkalinity was calculated from absorbance readings (444 nm and 616 nm), the known amount of hydrogen ion added, and the excess remaining.
Uncertainty: Precision of TA measurements is 4 μmol kg-1, as obtained from replicate measurements. Certified alkalinity reference materials (CRM's) supplied by A. G. Dickson (Scripps Institute of Oceanography) were analyzed for TA with each batch of samples for each cruise. The standard deviation between the mean value of alkalinity measurements of the standards and the certified value was 2 μmol kg-1.
