PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes discrete profile measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients obtained during the R/V Marion Dufresne cruise OISO-18 (EXPOCODE 35MF20091219) in the Indian Ocean from 2009-12-19 to 2010-01-24. These data were collected by C. Lo Monaco of Universite Pierre et Marie Curie; Institut Pierre Simon Laplace; Laboratoire D'Oceanographie et du Climat: Experimentations et Approches Numeriques and Nicolas Metzl of Universite Pierre et Marie Curie; Laboratoire de Biogeochimie et Chimie Marines as part of the CLIVAR_OISO18 data set. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: TCARBN
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: Field Replicate: Deep replicate samples were collected from two different Niskin bottles (usually 1000m or bottom). The mean difference between two deep replicates was 2.1 +/-1.9 mol/kg for total CO2 and 2.3+/-2.1 μmol/kg for alkalinity (n=15).
Standardization description: Certified Referenced Materials (CRMs), batch #91 and #97, provided by Dr. A. Dickson (SIO, University of California). The precision of the titration system, based on the analysis of CRMs, was +/-2.9 μmol/kg for both total CO2 and alkalinity.
CRM batch number: 91, 97
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: ALKALI
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Cell type (open or closed): closed
Curve fitting method: Water samples were collected from the Niskin bottles in 500 ml glass bottles for the simultaneous analysis of total CO2 and total alkalinity. Measurements were performed onboard following a potentiometric titration method (Edmond, 1970), using an automated system with a closed cell described by Goyet et al. (1991). The equivalence point is determined using a non-linear regression method (D.O.E., 1994).
Uncertainty: +/-3 μmol/kg
