PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from JAKOV SMIRNITSKIY in the Beaufort Sea, East Siberian Sea, Kara Sea and Laptev (or Nordenskjold) Sea from 2008-08-15 to 2008-09-16. These data include AMMONIUM (NH4), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-113 (CFC-113), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, SALINITY, TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA), WATER TEMPERATURE, pH, phosphate and silicate. The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement, bottle and spectrophotometer. These data were collected by Igor Semiletov of Pacific Oceanological Institute, Orjan Gustafsson of Stockholm University and Leif Anderson of University of Gothenburg as part of the CLIVAR_ISSS_08 data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: CLIVAR_ISSS_08 The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: DIC was determined by a coulometric titration method based on Johnson et al. (1987), having a precision of +/- 2 μmol kg-1, with the accuracy set by calibration against certified reference materials (CRM), supplied by A. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (USA)
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Curve fitting method: TA was determined by potentiometric titration, precision 5 +/- 2 μmol kg-1, (Haraldsson et al., 1997) with the accuracy set the same way as for DIC.
Uncertainty: CRM analysis indicates precision of about 1.2 μmol/kg
pH
Abbreviation: pH
pH scale: TOT @15C
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Temperature of pH measurement: 15
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: pH was determined by spectrophotometric detection (Clayton and Byrne, 1993; Lee and Millero, 1995), having a precision of +/-0.003 and the accuracy was set by the equilibrium constants of the indicator.
