The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement, bottle and spectrophotometer. These data were collected by Dennis Hansell of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Rik. Wanninkhof of NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, Richard A. Feely of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and Andrew Dickson of University of California - San Diego; Scripps Institution of Oceanography as part of the CLIVAR_A20_2012 data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: CLIVAR_A20_2012 The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Coulometric analysis: PMEL-1 and PMEL-2 SOMMA systems
Standardization description: Secondary standards were run throughout the cruise (at least one per station) on each analytical system. These standards are Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), consisting of poisoned, filtered, and UV irradiated seawater supplied by Dr. A. Dickson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO).
CRM batch number: Batch 117 = 2009.99 μmol/kg
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: potentiometric titration
Cell type (open or closed): open
Curve fitting method: Total alkalinity measurements were made using an open-cell, two-stage, potentiometric titration procedure similar to that used to certify reference materials for total alkalinity (see Dickson et al., 2003), except that samples were not weighed into the titration vessel but instead 99.9 mL was dispensed from a Dosimat using a 50 mL burette.
Method reference: Dickson, Andrew G., Chris Sabine and James R. Christian, editors, "Guide to Best Practices for Ocean CO2 Measurements", Pices Special Publication 3, IOCCP Report No. 8, October 2007, SOP 3b, "Determination of total alkalinity in sea water using an open-cell titration"
pH
Abbreviation: pH
pH scale: Total Scale
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Temperature of pH measurement: 25
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Agilent 8453 spectrophotometer
Uncertainty: The precision of the data can be accessed from measurements of duplicate analyses, certified reference material (CRM) Batch 117 (provided by Dr. Andrew Dickson, UCSD), and TRIS buffer Batch 10 (provided by Dr. Andrew Dickson, UCSD). CRMs were measured at least once a shift, and bottles of TRIS buffer were measured periodically throughout the cruise. The precision obtained from 182 duplicate analyses was found to be +/-0.0005.
