PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes discrete profile measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC113) obtained during the R/V Aurora Australis cruise AA0301, CLIVAR_SR03_2001 (EXPOCODE 09AR20011029) in the Southern Ocean from 2001-10-29 to 2001-12-13. These data were collected by Bronte Tilbrook and Stephen R. Rintoul of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and Christopher Sabine of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory as part of the CARINA/09AR20011029, CLIVAR_SR03_2001 data set. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: TCARBN
Unit: UMOL/KG
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: SOMMA Coulometric method
Standardization description: For each coulometer cell: Calibration of system by injecting two different volumes of pure CO2 from calibrated loops of a gas sample valve. Analysis of CRM's for each cell as a check on the standardisation.
CRM batch number: 52: Sal=33.608 TCO2=2005.57 TALK=2224.72
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: ALKALI
Unit: UMOL/KG
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Cell type (open or closed): Plexiglas, water jacketed cell
Curve fitting method: Non-linear regression for entire titration curve
Uncertainty: Accuracy and precision estimated to be ± 1.23 micromol/kg CRM's were used to calibrate the cell volume. Acid density was measured with an Anton Parr density meter. Acid concentrations were calibrated coulometrically. A total of 45 CRM samples were analysed for titration alkalinity during the cruise, and the standard deviation of the measurements was 1.23 micromol/kg. Duplicate samples analysed during the cruise showed an absolute difference of 0.79 ± 0.62 micromol/kg (1 s.d.; n = 151).
