PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from ODEN in the Arctic Ocean, Beaufort Sea and Bering Sea from 2005-08-19 to 2005-09-25 and retrieved during cruise (ODEN05) and 77DN20050819. These data include ALKALINITY, CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-113 (CFC-113), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, SULFUR HEXAFLUORIDE (SF6), WATER TEMPERATURE and pH. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement and bottle. These data were collected by A. Karlqvist of Polarforsknings Sekretariatet [Swedish Polar Research Secretariat] and Leif Anderson of University of Gothenburg as part of the CLIVAR_ODEN05 data set. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: DIC was determined by extraction of CO2 from a known volume of acidified seawater with coulometric titration and photometric detection of the endpoint.
Standardization description: The extracted CO2 was titrated coulometricaly and the endpoint was detected by photometry using a UIC instrument. The titration is terminated when 4 endpoints are reached, i.e. the counts/minute are below the blank value four times, normally achieved in 8-9 minutes. From the total counts the blank is subtracted, by multiplying the blank/minute value with the run time (in minutes). The resulting counts are internally multiplied with a fixed factor (and divided by density) to give DIC in μmol/kg. Individual blank were determined for every sample by taking the two lowest increments during a titration. Most samples were titrated with an assumed salinity of 35. The result was later corrected by a factor calculated from density at salinity 35 and density at sample salinity.
