PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes Surface underway, discrete sample and profile data collected from MIRAI in the Bering Sea, North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean from 2007-10-08 to 2007-12-26 and retrieved during cruise CLIVAR_P14_2007. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-113 (CFC-113), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), DELTA CARBON-13, DELTA CARBON-14, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA), WATER TEMPERATURE, pH, phosphate and silicate. The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer, Coulometer for DIC measurement, Shower head chamber equilibrator for autonomous carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement, bottle and spectrophotometer. These data were collected by Akihiko Murata, Masao Fukasawa and Takeshi Kawano of Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) as part of the CLIVAR_P14_2007 data set. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Measurements of CT were made with two total CO2 measuring systems (systems A and B; Nippon ANS, Inc.), which are slightly different from each other. The systems comprise of a seawater dispensing system, a CO2 extraction system and a coulometer (Model 5012, UIC Inc.).
CRM batch number: 80=2006.50 μmol/kg
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: Gran
Cell type (open or closed): Closed
Curve fitting method: The measuring system for AT (customized by Nippon ANS, Inc.) comprises of a water dispensing unit, an autoburette (Metrohm), a pH meter (Thermo Orion) and auto-sampler (6 ports). They are automatically controlled by a PC. Separate electrodes (Reference electrode: REF201, (Radiometer), Glass pH electrode: pHG201-7 (Radiometer)), or combined electrodes (ROSS 8102BN, Thermo Orion) were used.
TA blank correction: (CRM, batches 80 and 75, certified value = 2214.49 and 2210.09 μmol kg-1)
Uncertainty: The average and standard deviation of absolute values of differences of AT analyzed consecutively were 0.5 and 0.5 μmol kg-1(n = 407).
