PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes discrete profile measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), tritium and helium obtained during the R/V Roger Revelle cruise CLIVAR_I08S_2007 (EXPOCODE 33RR20070204) in the Indian Ocean from 2007-02-04 to 2007-03-17. These data were collected by Dennis Hansell of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Richard A. Feely and Christopher Sabine of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and Andrew Dickson of University of California - San Diego; Scripps Institution of Oceanography as part of the CLIVAR_I08S_2007 data set. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: TCARBN
Unit: UMOL/KG
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Replicate information: The precision is displayed by the greater than 450 replicate samples drawn. The absolute average difference from the mean of these replicates are less than 0.85 μmol/kg. No significant systematic differences were noted.
Standardization description: The coulometers were each calibrated by injec ting aliquots of pure CO2 (99.99%) by means of an 8-port valve outfitted with two sample loops (Wilke et al., 1993). The instruments were calibrated at the beginning and end of each full station with a set of the gas loop injections.
CRM batch number: Batch 78
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: ALKALI
Unit: UMOL/KG
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: potentiometric
Cell type (open or closed): Open
Curve fitting method: Analys is of samples was carried out using an open cell system per A.G. Dickson (complete reference info to be provided later) using a two-s tep titration. While the sample was being stirred slow ly, an approximately 2.5 ml aliquot of acid was added to bring the pH of the sample to ~3.5. After 4.5 minutes of vigorous stirring and bubbling w ith CO2 free air, additional aliquots of 0.05 mls of the acid were added.
