PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from PRIDE OF BILBAO in the Bay of Biscay, English Channel and North Atlantic Ocean from 2005-09-26 to 2010-09-16 and retrieved during cruise VOS_Pride_of_Bilbao_2005_2010. These data include DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC), DISSOLVED OXYGEN, NITRATE + NITRITE CONTENT (CONCENTRATION), PHOSPHATE, SALINITY, SILICATE, TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA) and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include Alkalinity titrator, CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement and bottle. These data were collected by David Hydes and Zongpei Jiang of National Oceanography Centre, Southampton as part of the VOS_Pride_of_Bilbao data set.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: Repeated measurements on the same batch of seawater (n>=3) in the lab gave consistent results (precision for the whole dataset estimated as 2.0±0.7 μmol kg- 1).
Standardization description: In order to standardize the results, Certified Reference Materials (CRM) from A.G. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography were analysed as standards to calibrate the instrument at the beginning and end of each day of analysis. A daily correction factor was applied to all measured values according to Millero et al. (1998).
CRM batch number: 81 90 91 93 97 98 99 105
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: Titration with HCl (~0.10 mol/L) uses a closed cell procedure with an open cell, with a pH half cell electrode (glass bodied Orion 8101SC, Ross, USA) and an Ag/AgCl reference electrode (model 6.0729.100, Metrohm, Switzerland).
Cell type (open or closed): open cell
Curve fitting method: non-linear curve fitting (least-squares) approach (Dickson et al., 2007)
Uncertainty: Repeated measurements on the same batch of seawater (n>=3) were undertaken every day prior to sample analysis in order to assess the precision of the method. The precision was estimated for the whole dataset to be 2.0±0.7 μmol kg-1 for DIC and 1.2±0.5 μmol kg-1 for TA. The accuracy of the measurement is assured by the standardization using the CRM from A.G. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography on daily basis.
