VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: Replicate seawater samples were taken from the surface, 1000 m, and bottom Niskin sample bottles and run at different times during the cell. No systematic biases were discerned and the average difference of the samples was 1.0 μmol/kg for surface values; 1.2 μmol/kg for duplicate samples at 1000 m and 1.4 μmol/kg for duplicate samples near the bottom.
Standardization description: The coulometers were calibrated by injecting aliquots of pure CO2 (99.995%) by means of an 8-port valve outfitted with two sample loops that had been calibrated by Kelly Brown, CCN Consulting (Wilke, 1993)
CRM batch number: 59
Total alkalinity
Abbreviation: TA
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Type of titration: Single point titration
Cell type (open or closed): Closed
Curve fitting method: The titration system used to determine TA consisted of a Metrohm 665 Dosimat titrator and an Orion 720A pH meter controlled by a personal computer
Uncertainty: no information
Method reference: Millero et al., 1993
pH
Abbreviation: pH
pH scale: Sea Water Scale
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Temperature of pH measurement: 25
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Seawater pH was measured using the spectrophotometric procedure (Byrne, 1987) and the indicator calibration of Clayton and Byrne (1993). The indicator was an 8.0-mM solution of m-cresol purple sodium salt (C21H17O5Na) in MilliQ water.
pCO2 (fCO2) discrete
Abbreviation: fCO2
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Measured
Seawater volume: 500 mL
Headspace volume: 80 mL
Temperature of measurement: 20deg.C
Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The fugacity of CO2 was measured at a constant temperature of 20deg.C by equilibrating a 500-mL water aliquot in a volumetric flask with a closed headspace. The headspace is circulated through a non-dispersive infrared detector that measures both CO2 and H2O levels.
Uncertainty: The precision of the results is based on comparison of duplicate values and is estimated to be +/-2 uatm or 0.3%
