PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: This dataset includes dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, water temperature, salinity, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), carbon-13 and other variables collected from discrete sample and profile observations during NOAA Ship Malcolm Baldrige cruise CGC_90 (EXPOCODE 33MW19900222 ) in the Pacific and Southern Oceans from 1990-02-22 to 1990-04-16. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD, Coulometer for DIC measurement and bottle. These data were collected by Richard A. Feely, M. F. Lamb and D. Wisegarver of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory as part of the CARINA_CGC_90 and CGC-90_32MW19900222 data set. CDIAC associated the following cruise ID(s) with this data set: 3175CG90_1 and CGC_90. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

VARIABLES / PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon
Abbreviation: DIC
Observation type: discrete
In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation
Measured or calculated: Calculated
Replicate information: Replicates analyzed at three different stations throughout the cruise yielded a precision of < or = 0.05%. The reported TCO2 data have been corrected to reflect the difference in accuracy to the CRM; the correction applied is +3 μmol/kg TCO2.
Standardization description: Upon retrieval of the CTD-rosette package on deck, samples for TCO2 were collected in 500-mL glass-stoppered bottles and poisoned with 0.5 mL of saturated HgCl2 solution to decrease bacterial oxidation of organic matter prior to analysis. The samples were analyzed immediately when possible, but always within 24 h after collection.
