Definition:The potential temperature of a parcel of fluid at pressure P is the temperature that the parcel would acquire if adiabatically brought to a standard reference pressure P0, usually 1000 millibars. The potential temperature is denoted as Theta.

Measurement of water temperature taking water's compressibility into account, provided no heat exchange of the water sample with its surroundings. This is important because water temperature is
higher under the higher pressure conditions of the deep ocean compared to the temperature of that same water at the lower pressure conditions of the ocean surface.
