Saildrone Data to Archive and Metadata 3 messages Andrew Evans - NOAA Federal Mon, Apr 15, 2024 at 8:36 AM To: Kevin O'Brien - NOAA Affiliate Cc: Eugene Burger - NOAA Federal , Jennifer Bowers - NOAA Federal , Katharine Weathers - NOAA Federal Good morning Kevin, I wanted to see if you/PMEL could share a few saildrone datasets with us. I would like to help shepard the 60 or so datasets you guys have been trying to get to the archive through the process but would like to start with 3 - 4 of them first to build out the archive packages for submission. The idea being that we can get those initial datasets through and then build out the archive package for the remaining datasets based on what worked and hopefully be able to auto populate a lot of the information needed. Ive been talking with John Relph and have gotten access to their wiki that builds out the machine readable code based on what is submitted through the S2N portal. Hopefully that would pave the way for the rest of the data to be potentially fast tracked through ATRAC the process later this summer (potentially PI-16). On a different but related note, we have built out most of the acquisition and curation xml templates based on the metadata from the ERDAPP server and the hosted netCDF files. In doing so we did have some questions about some of the fields re: data licensing and some of the engineering data I couldnt find on the spec sheets from Saildrone or on the ERDAPP page. Let me know when you have 30 minutes to an hour to discuss Cheers Andy Andrew "Andy" Evans, Ph.D. Geospatial Scientist Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (COGS) NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) 1021 Balch Boulevard, Suite 1003 Stennis Space Center, MS 39529 (601) 207-2323 andrew.evans@noaa.gov Eugene Burger - NOAA Federal Tue, Apr 16, 2024 at 7:39 PM To: Andrew Evans - NOAA Federal Cc: Kevin O'Brien - NOAA Affiliate , Jennifer Bowers - NOAA Federal , Katharine Weathers - NOAA Federal , Nathan Anderson - NOAA Affiliate , Ellen Koukel - NOAA Affiliate Hello Andrew, Good hearing from you, and a very timely request. Two weeks ago we looked at archiving these data from Saildrone platforms on S2N. On the day S2N was somewhat buggy, and it quickly became evident that this process will take a huge amount of time given the large number of parameters and high volume of metadata. For the test you mention, I would therefore begin with these data. These data have some QC information. The same adata orso exist on your ERDDAP, but are not QC'ed and have some data before and after the core mission period. If we can fast-trac an ATRAC approval that would be fantastic. We are working at getting the metadata in place for all the other Saildrone data we have in place. Maybe we can catch up next week once you have had a chance to look at this. I am cc'ing two other PMEL colleagues - Nathan Anderson (data manager with OCS effort), and Ellen Koukel, a newly appointed data curator with PMEL, who will help with fixing the metadata on our collection of data from Saildrone. It looks like there is a brief gap next Thursday on almost everyone's calendar too. A quick look at the data and it appears from 2019 forward the primary sensor package was the MetOcean package but prior to that the sensor package was full atmospheric and ocean core sensor suite plus ADCP, pH and carbon sensors. So for the missions using the MetOcean package, I have a few questions regarding the data accuracy relative to the positioning and some minor edits for the template and those would be complete aside from editing mission specific things like bounding boxes and dates. I will start with those missions using the MetOcean sensor package because there is also a conversion for CF names to ATDB instrument types for the archive package and a few other details to hammer out.
