Data sets supporting "Serendipitous observations from animal-borne video loggers reveal synchronous diving and equivalent foraging success rates in chinstrap penguins" by Jefferson T. Hinke, Tamara M. Russell, Victoria Hermanson, Laura Brazier, Stephanie L. Walden and published in Marine Biology (2021) with doi 10.1007/s00227-021-03937-5 are described here. The data were collected at Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island, Antarctica (60.79°W, 62.46°S) in December 2019 and January 2020. The data include: 1) Raw video files, as recorded by the Little Leonardo DVL400M065 video loggers in <=30-minute intervals, for a male (M_MOVI) and a female (F_MOVI) chinstrap penguin. The video segments for each bird are numbered sequentially, beginning with 3. Files include 10 video clips for the male (M_MOVI0003, M_MOVI0004, M_MOVI0005, M_MOVI0006, M_MOVI0007, M_MOVI0008, M_MOVI0009, M_MOVI0010, M_MOVI0011, M_MOVI0012) and 11 video clips for the female (F_MOVI0003, F_MOVI0004, F_MOVI0005, F_MOVI0006, F_MOVI0007, F_MOVI0008, F_MOVI0009, F_MOVI0010, F_MOVI0011, F_MOVI0012, F_MOVI0013). 2) Raw output files from two Lotek LAT1800FP depth loggers that were deployed simultaneously on the same male and a female chinstrap penguin that also carried the video loggers. The depth loggers recorded pressure every second. The files include "Raw_TDR_Male.csv" and "Raw_TDR_Female.csv" for the male and female penguin, respectively. Headers in each file include: Rec#: a consecutive numbering for each depth reading Date: The date of the record (m/d/y) Time: The time of the record (hh:mm:ss) Pressure: The pressure (dbar) recorded WetDry: An binary indicator of whether the tag was in the water (1) or not (0). ValidFlag: A biniary indicator of sensor status as OK (1) or not (0). 3) Annotation files for the male and female bird made by each of 5 independent annotators/observers (OBS1, OBS2, OBS3, OBS4, and OBS5). These files include subsets of the raw depth records that correspond to the time period of video recording and appends an annotation for key events observed in the video files at the corresponding time. There are therefore five annotated files for the male videos (Annotated_OBS1_Male, Annotated_OBS2_Male, Annotated_OBS3_Male, Annotate_OBS4_Male, Annotated_OBS5_Male) and five annotated files for the female (Annotated_OBS1_Male, Annotated_OBS2_Male, Annotated_OBS3_Male, Annotate_OBS4_Male, Annotated_OBS5_Male). Headers in each annotated file inlcude: movie: the identifying number of the corresponding video clip (e.g, 3 is MOVI0003) time: the date and time stamp (m/d/y h:m:s) from the depth record depth: the depth (m) recorded at the time annotation: a descriptor of the activty observed in the video at this time. The possible entries under the "annotation" header include: begmov#### - identifies start time of movie #### endmov#### - identifies end time of movie #### ashore - identifies time when bird exits water to be on land enters_water - identifies time when bird leaves short and enters water dive - identifes time of dive start surface - identifies time of dive end trans_beg - identifies time of transit begin trans_end - identifies time of transit end krill - identifies time of krill strike fish - identifies time of strike at fish unk - identifies time of stike at unk/unidentifiable prey item krill_swarm - identifies time when penguin encounters krill swarm for the first time 4) A file with annotations that identify the timing of companion sigthings ('companion_sightings.csv'). Headers inlclude: 2212_TDR_Time: Date and time from the depth logger (m/d/y h:m:s) for the female penguin 2212_DVL_Time: Date and time printed to the video clips ((m/d/y h:m:s) for the female penguin 2212_Depth: Depth (m) recorded at the corresponding time 2212_Annotation: annotation of the female video, as described under point 3, above. 2212_Annotation_Notes: relevent notes about the annotation 2212_Obs_Cam_Penguin: any entry here indicates time of observations on the male bird (cam2213) in the female video. 2212_Obs_Tag_Penguin: any entry here indicates time of observations of a flipper banded bird in the female video. 2213_TDR_Time: Date and time from the depth logger (m/d/y h:m:s) for the male penguin 2213_DVL_Time: Date and time printed to the video clips ((m/d/y h:m:s) for the male penguin 2213_Depth: Depth (m) recorded at the corresponding time 2213_Annotation: annotation of the male video, as described under point 3, above. 2213_Annotation_Notes: relevent notes about the annotation 2213_Obs_Cam_Penguin: any entry here indicates time of observations on the female bird (cam2212) in the female video. 2213_Obs_Tag_Penguin: any entry here indicates time of observations of a flipper banded bird in the male video. 5) Krill (Euphausia superba) lengths measured during diet collection, via gastric lavage, from 18 adult chinstrap penguins during the chick gaurding stage, are included in the file 'Krill_lengths.csv'. Headers include: Year: season identifer for the austral summer of study Species: common name (chinstrap) of species (Pygoscelis antarcticus) studied Date: m/d/y when the sample was collected Length-mm: the length of each individaul krill measured Sample: a unique identifier for each penguin from which a sample was collected (N=18). 6) A file ('synched_dives.csv') with manually-aligned annotation summaries for synchronous dives from each observer during the video observaton period.
