This data package includes data from Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information and Data Cooperative (GRIIDC) Unique Dataset Identifiers (UDIs) R4.x267.000:0107, R4.x267.000:0110, R4.x267.000:0123, R4.x267.000:0130, and R4.x267.000.0131. It includes short-lived radioisotope (SLRad), bulk density/porewater data from sediment cores, and sediment core photographs collected aboard R/V Weatherbird II cruise (cruise designator WB-0815 and WB-0915) and R/V Justo Sierra cruise (cruise designator JS-0815) in the Gulf of Mexico from 2015-07-30 to 2015-10-01. The Principal Investigator is Steven A Murawski from University of South Florida / College of Marine Science. The purpose of these cruises was to determine dry bulk density and % porewater content for sub-sampled core intervals, Provide age control and sedimentation rates for sediment cores, and the visual representation of sediment stratigraphy, color and visual properties. The R/V Weatherbird II cruises WB-0815 and WB-0915, and R/V Justo Sierra cruise JS-0815 were led by chief scientists Dr. Steve Murawski and Dr. David Hollander. There are both originators files and files that were converted by GRIIDC from the originally submitted format to an archival format. The converted files are located in the same directory as the original file. The Excel Archival Tool was used to programmatically convert Microsoft Excel files into open-source formats suitable for long-term archival. Converted File Types: *.csv- Comma-separated-value(CSV) files that GRIIDC converted from Microsoft Excel files. There is one CSV file for each Excel spreadsheet. For multi-spreadsheet files, the sheet name is appended to the file basename, separated by a underscore (_) and the worksheet name from the originator file. SLRad data were generated for selected core sub-samples at 2mm sampling intervals for “surficial unit” and 5mm sampling resolution intervals to the base of cores. SLRad data generated include sample activity as disintegrations per minute per gram (dpm/g) of 1) Excess Thorium-234 (234Thxs) activity, which is calculated by measuring the total Thorium-234 (234ThTot) activity and the subtraction of the measured or estimated “supported” Thorium-234 (234ThSup) activity, 2) Excess Lead-210 (210Pbxs) activity, which is calculated by measuring the total Lead-210 (210PbTot) activity and subtraction of the measured background "supported" Lead-210 (210PbSup) activity {average of Lead-214 (214Pb) at 295 kiloelectron volts (keV), 214Pb at 351keV, and Bismuth-214 (214Bi) at 609keV}, 3) Cesium-137 (137Cs) activity, and 4) Berilium-7 (7Be) activity. The cores were extruded in the laboratory and the sediment core preservation was not required for this analysis. Samples were analyzed for short-lived radioisotopes by gamma spectrometry on Series HPGe (High-Purity Germanium) Coaxial Planar Photon Detectors.
