In that case, please use the following updated Title and keep the abstract. Note that since there were many instruments, we did not include the instrument names in the title but focused on the data. Let us know if that works or should be changed. Best regards, Sheekela Title: In situ optical and meteorological data including spectral radiances, remote sensing reflectances, absorption and backscattering; chlorophyll and other phytoplankton pigments; variable fluorescence; phytoplankton identification; chromophoric dissolved organic matter, particulate and dissolved carbon and other oceanographic data collected aboard the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster in the US Coastal mid-Atlantic and Western Atlantic Ocean for the JPSS dedicated VIIRS Calibration/Validation cruise from 2014-11-11 to 2014-11-20 (NCEI Accession 0156310). - Modified abstract: This accession contains oceanographic and meteorological data, such as optical backscatter, particulate organic carbon, pigments, salinity, water temperature, chromophoric dissolved matter (CDOM), chlorophyll, air temperature, wind direction and speed collected during the Dedicated JPSS VIIRS Ocean Color Calibration/Validation Cruise (NF-14-09). The purpose of this cruise aboard NOAA Ship Nancy Foster was to collect in situ optical and ancillary data for validation of JPSS VIIRS satellite ocean color radiometry and derived products. The project interval was 9 to 22 November 2014. This 14-day interval included 10 days at sea (including transits), 2 staging days, 1 de-staging day and 1 day crew rest. Days at sea were 11 to 20 November 2014. The primary area of operations was the Western Atlantic along the U.S. Mid- and Southeastern Coast, including cross-shelf, Gulf Stream and blue waters. The cruise track was optimized to accommodate sampling transient features present in the region while respecting weather conditions during the time of the cruise. The cruise transected over 1800 km and occupied 23 stations for collection of underway and profile ocean color measurements during the 10-day duration. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sheekela Baker-Yeboah, Ph.D. NOAA/NESDIS/NCWCP/SCOD 5830 University Research Ct., College Park, MD 20740 Phone: 301-683-3382 Sheekela.Baker-Yeboah@noaa.gov Assistant Research Scientist /Oceanographer University of Maryland Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) College Park, MD 20740-3823 sbakerye@umd.edu On Thu, Jul 20, 2017 at 3:48 PM, Zhankun Wang - NOAA Affiliate wrote: Hi Sheekela, Just want to check if you have any future changes to the abstract of accession 0156310. Glad to know that you will work on the archive of this dataset. Thanks for providing the new title. Please provide me a new abstract if you would like to change/expand the one I sent out. When completing the abstract, consider these points: State what the 'things' are that are recorded. State the key aspects recorded about these things. State what form the data takes. State any other limiting information, such as time period of validity of the data. Add purpose of data resource where relevant (e.g. for survey data). Aim to be understood by non-experts. Do not include general background information. Avoid jargon and unexplained abbreviations. I just used chlorophyll, CDOM etc as examples. Note, those are just some suggestions. It is up to the submitter to decide what should be included in the title and abstract. The reason we want to modify the title is to make the dataset more searchable. A lot of search engineers only search the titles. So it is important to have a clear and concise title. The abstract is also important for the reader to quickly understand your data set. Remember, the focuses of the abstract should be on the data set itself, not the cruise backgrounds, although those are valuable information too. I will be out of town between Sep 17 and Sep 30 to attend a research cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. I may not have email access during that period. But I will response to my emails as soon as I get back to my office. Your title suggestion does not quite capture the most relevant parameters, so i'll have to think about that and discuss with you - next week is very booked, so please don't think i am ignoring this, but will catch up with you again later in Sept. Thanks, V- Zhankun Wang - NOAA Affiliate wrote on 9/9/2016 3:48 PM: Dear Veronica Lance, I am reviewing the metadata and data received by NCEI from you with assigned accession number 0156310. The title and abstract of the data submission did not quite follow the general guidance of NCEI archive recommendations and might need to be revised to improve the quality of the metadata and to better reflect the contents of the data set. The current title does not indicate the data types, collecting instruments and platforms of the data set. The abstract should provide a clear and concise statement that enables the reader to understand the content of the dataset. Please see below for more guidance on abstract. 1. For title, the general construction template for data set title is DataType(s) (observationType(s)) collected by instrumentType(s) from [the] platform(s) in [the] seaname(s) for [the] projectName(s) from startdate to enddate (NCEI Accession #######) More specifically, for example, the recommended algorithmic representation for constructing a title for an data submission package containing oceanographic profile and other data could be represented as follows: Oceanographic [datatype1](, )[datatype2](, and)[datatype3] profiles (and other measurements) from [instrumentType1]s(, )[instrumentType2]s(, and other instruments) taken from the [platformName1(, platformName2,] (and other platforms) in the [seaname1(, seaname2, ) (and other locations) (for the [projectName1]) from [startdate] to [endate] (NCEI Accession #######) Information in square brackets are terms from the identified NCEI ATDB controlled vocabulary. Information in parentheses is optional content that should be included if applicable. If you are not familiar with ATDB controlled vocabulary, just include proper terms there. I will check to make sure they are in the ATDB controlled vocabulary. I would recommend to revise the title to something like: "Chlorophyll, CDOM, HPLC pigments and other oceanographic and meteorological data collected by fluorometer, spectrometer and other instruments taken from the Nancy Foster in the northern Atlantic Ocean for the [project name] from 2014-11-11 to 2014-11-20 (NCEI Accession 0156310) 2. For guidance when completing the abstract, consider these points: State what the 'things' are that are recorded. State the key aspects recorded about these things. State what form the data takes. State any other limiting information, such as time period of validity of the data. Add purpose of data resource where relevant (e.g. for survey data). Aim to be understood by non-experts. Do not include general background information. Avoid jargon and unexplained abbreviations." I hope these are useful recommendations to improve the quality of your data. Please let me know if you have any questions. You can email the title and abstract directly to me at (zhankun.wang@noaa.gov) if you decide to make the changes.
