This World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) Satellite Sea Level Data DVD folder contains gridded Sea Level over the global oceans. There is a long time series from PO.DAAC, and a short sample of higher resolution grids from AVISO.
- sea level (SL) from TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetry, for October 1992 to December 2001, produced by PO.DAAC.
- a simple bin average onto a grid 0.5 deg in latitude and longitude, and 10-day in time.
- a gaussian interpolation onto a grid 1.0 deg in latitude and longitude every 5-days.
The documentation summarizes the production scheme, processing methodology, and other, relevant issues.
Both NetCDF data files (ending in .nc) and gif images of each grid (ending in .gif) are included. Also included are documentation describing the data, a program to animate the browse images in any time window, and simple programs to read the data values.
- sea level (SL) from TOPEX/POSEIDON, ERS-1 and ERS-2 altimetry, for 1993 and for 1996, produced by CLS and AVISO. This is a small sample from a complete set which is available outside this WOCE collection. The main differences from the PO.DAAC data above are the gridding method, and the fact that when 2 or 3 altimetric satellites are present, the information content and actual grid resolution are higher in the CLS version. There are also small differences in corrections.
This folder is part of a larger set, produced under the guidance of the Data Products Committee of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. The larger set includes in-situ data on ocean temperature, salinity, tracers, currents (from current meters, ADCP, floats and drifters), sea level, surface meteorology, as well as a comprehensive overview of data collection during WOCE. For more information, contact NOAA/NODC.
This DVD folder is a product of the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC), an element of the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). PO.DAAC is responsible for archiving and distributing satellite data relevant to the physical state of the ocean. PO.DAAC is located at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena, California, USA.
