WORLD OCEAN CIRCULATION EXPERIMENT
BATHYMETRIC DATA
The World Data Center A (bathymetry) at the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) Boulder, working with the DIU, has assembled the available underway bathymetry in a variety of formats from WOCE cruises. Much of the data have been in need of examination both for errors and correction for local sound velocity. In this work they were assisted for a number of cruises by SIO as part of the Pacific WOCE Atlas project and also for the Atlantic Ocean by Mr P Hunter of the GEBCO office at the Southampton Oceanography Centre.
The work has concentrated on the cruises of the One Time survey. The coverage of the data are shown in the figure below. In addition there are a number of datasets from repeat surveys (particularly of the Southern Ocean) and from mooring deployments.
We also include here an unpublished 1996 compilation, by Dr Simon Thompson, of the known sill depths between basins in the world ocean
The table below lists the
all the available datasets. They have been assimilated by NGDC into their Marine Trackline Database,
GEODAS 
with reference ID as shown. The links under
NGDC No. in the table are to copies of the datasets on this CD which were downloaded
from NGDC in MGD77 ASCII format. These
copies have corrected depth in columns 52-57 in units of 1/10 metre. Latitude
is in columns 28-35 and longitude in columns 36-44 in units of 0.00001 degree.
Dates were not always present in the original records and may be arbitrary.
The MGD77 format has been
truncated to the 60 columns containing useful data.
The 24 header records which contain, inter alia, cruise dates, WOCE line numbers, and WOCE expocodes are linked in the Expocode column.
NetCDF
versions of the files, generated by the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC),
are in the links in the first column and there is an inventory
available. The
BODC has performed additional quality control and added supporting information
on the cruises.
Note that there are substantial gaps on some sections. However, the data often include passage legs to and from the WOCE lines.
