WOCE-Met Data Center Mission Statement

The WOCE DAC for surface meteorological data at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies, is a part of RVSMDC. Our mission is to collect, check, archive, and distribute all surface meteorological data from international WOCE vessels as well as surface meteorological data from WOCE-sponsored experiments. This includes data from nearly-continuous recording systems, ship bridge observations, and all other practically obtainable surface meteorological data from these sources.

Data quality evaluation procedures have been developed and are utilized to produce the value-added data sets. To date, 81% of the known 543 WOCE lines have been fully processed through our 2-level quality control system, and are publically available on this disk. An additional 7% of the WOCE meteorology data have been determined to be lost due to sensor malfunction or media degridation. The WOCE project is in its final stages and the data on this disk represents the final WOCE meteorology archive.

Associated with the DAC at Florida State University is the WOCE SAC for surface fluxes. The SAC produces and analyzes regularly gridded fields of ocean surface forcing fields (e.g. winds, temperatures, humidity, turbulent fluxes of momentum, moisture, and heat) which would be suitable for use by ocean models as well as for intensive diagnostic studies. Some estimate of the uncertainties of these fields will also be produced. All available in-situ and remotely sensed data are to be used in these analysis and these analyses would eventually be available in near-real-time. Comparisons of these products to other flux sets from numerical weather prediction centers (ECMWF, NMC, JMA, etc.) are underway.
