From: Chris Meinen - NOAA Federal Date: Thu, Jul 7, 2016 at 6:48 PM Subject: New WBTS data set to archive at NCEI To: Christopher Paver Hi Chris, As we've discussed during your visits, we collect a number of different types of observations here as part of our Western Boundary Time Series project. One of the less common instruments we use is the ocean 'dropsonde' float (which is different from the atmospheric dropsonde). The ocean dropsonde is a free-falling float the yields a measurement of the vertical-mean horizontal velocity at a location. We do cruises (8-10 per year most years) that collect nine dropsonde casts during each cruise. We have sorted all of the historical dropsonde cruises that we have into three tar-file archives that are attached. The three files are based on year, and these three periods were selected due to differences in how the dropsonde measurement was made in those periods. We continue to collect these data, and in the future we will send you annual files that contain all cruises in a year. We have also attached a readme file that explains a bit more about this data and points to two publications that have more information. If you have any questions, please let me know.
