The raster comprises data from an additional, approximately 36 nautical mile long, region surveyed to the east of the originally planned H12935 survey area. While in transit on April 12, 2016 to retrieve a wayward glider deployed from the Nancy Foster, this area of shelf edge south of St. Thomas, USVI was opportunistically surveyed. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in this area between April 7th and April 18th, 2016. Referred to in the mission report as the "St. Thomas Ledge Area," it seamlessly merges with prior data aquired in 2008, 2009, and 2013. Survey H12935 was conducted as part of project M-I907-NF-16, a continuation of the NOAA Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA) Biogeography Branch's Seafloor Mapping of the US Caribbean project. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Kongsberg EM710 MKII multibeam echosounder (100khz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is spatially referenced in UTM Zone 20 North, Datum WGS84. The backscatter component of the bathymetry data were geometrically and radiometrically corrected using the .all files sourced from Kongsberg SIS software, then processed in Fledermaus Geocoder Toolbox (FMGT) v 7.5.3. Acoustic backscatter mosaics are an important piece of information when characterizing surficial seafloor features and delineating benthic habitats. The project was conducted to meet IHO order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards. Purpose: This multibeam data was collected as IOCM (Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping) project M-I907-NF-16 during the thirteenth year of an ongoing NOAA scientific research mission in the US Caribbean to characterize midshelf and deep water coral reef habitats at depths down to 1,000 meters. The mission's purpose is to better understand the resources within the surveyed reef habitats, and ultimately develop species utilization models linking physical habitats with biological information. The multibeam backscatter, multibeam bathymetry, and ground truth video footage collected during the 2016 mission will be used internally to characterize sea floor topography and to create benthic habitat maps, helping NOAA to meet its mapping commitment to the US Coral Reef Task Force. The resulting publicly-distributed data is also a contribution to the greater scientific community interested in the Caribbean seafloor.
