Summary

Studies in the trade-wind zone of the tropical Atlantic showed that in the region of the North trade-wind current characterized by a rise of deep waters the main phytoplankton mass concentrated within a depth of 25-50 m, in the region of the South trade-wind current (zone of water lowering) — within a depth to 100 m. The values of the phytoplankton number and biomass in the 0—10 m layer at the first station are higher than at the second, which is explained by a higher content of biogens here, in particular, phosphates. Vertical distribution of the main mass of planktonic algae was determined to a considerable extent by the position of the density jump The regions under study had no practical differences as to the species composition of phytoplankton.
