Summary

During more than 20 years in the IBSS the investigations of epi- and rnesopelagic fishes and cephalopods of the tropical zones of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans are carried out.
The main directions of researches include the study of species composition, zoogeography, horizontal and vertical migrations of the species, their intraspecific structure, ecology and biology of mass species, interspecies relations, estimation of stocks and development of basis for rational utilization and protection of the fishery species populations.
The results of this work have allowed considerably to revise previous representations about structure and function of oceanic ecosystems, as well as to define more precisely potential opportunities of the World Ocean on production of biological resources.
