+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 15-34 Voyage Dates: 04-23 July, 2008 Chief Scientist(s): Raymond Lee (Di Iorio/Lee) Address: Raymond Lee Wash St. U School of Biological Sciences Washington State University Pullman, WA 99164 Di Iorio University of Georgia Department of Marine Sciences 250 Marine Sciences Building Athens GA 30602 Phone: Di Iorio: 706 542-7020 Lee: 509/335-5727 Email: Di Iorio: daniela@uga.edu Lee: [1]rlee@mail.wsu.edu Cruise Objective: Lee: Physiological measurements, deployment of in situ cameras and sensors Di Iorio: The science objectives are to sample the hydrothermal vent plume of Grotto in the Main Endeavour vent Field and to recover and redeploy two acoustic scintillation moorings. Moorings will be recovered by acoustic release mechanism and serviced on board the ship. Redeployment will be to some drop location and Alvin will locate moorings using the Homer probe, and place the moorings to previous locations using previous anchors as markers - all instrumentation on the moorings are Alvin certified to 2242 m. Direct sampling involves video and acoustic imaging of the plume, plume temperature as a function of height, temperature as a function of 100m spatial distance around Grotto, plume water samples for particle concentrations and size distribution at approximately 20-30 m above the vent orifice. Navigational data for Alvin is required. Science Activities: 17 Alvin dives (11 Lee, 6 DiIorio) Operations Area: Di Iorio Main Endeavour vent field 47deg 56.88 N, 129deg 5.94W Lee: Area encompassed by 48*30N 129*20 W; 47*30N 128*36W 2200meters Departure Port: Astoria, Oregon Agent: Master R/V Atlantis Attn: Scientist's Name c/o Ship Service Co. 968 Commercial St. Astoria, OR 97103 Contact: Lou Marconeri tel.
