Abstract:
This cruise used the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason II to: explore 4-6 new sites for the occurrence of
deep water coral reefs; made collections of Lophelia and other corals for genetic and physiological studies,
made collections of communities associated with Lophelia and other corals for ecological studies; collected
quantitative digital imagery for characterization of sites and coral communities; collect spatially explicit
physical near bottom oceanographic data; deploy cameras and microbial arrays; reposition larval traps and
current meters; collected push cores; and conducted a series of linked archeological/ biological
investigations on deep water shipwrecks.
Purpose:
Part of a multi-year study of deepsea corals in the Gulf of Mexico.

Description:
At 274 ft and displacing more than 3,200 tons, the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown is the flagship of the NOAA
fleet. Named in memory of a former the U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary who perished in a plane
crash in 1996, the ship is a state-of-the-art oceanographic and atmospheric research platform. The Ron
Brown, as it is commonly and fondly known, is equipped with an array of advanced instruments and
sensors. From its home port in Charleston, South Carolina, the ship has sailed the Atlantic, Pacific,
and Indian Oceans, conducting scientific studies to increase our understanding of the world's marine
environment. The Ron Brown carries a complement of 5 NOAA Corps officers, 20 crew members, and can
accommodate up to 33 scientists. The crew's primary responsibilities involve day-to-day operations. This
includes routine data collection and management tasks related to the ship's mission as a scientific
research platform.

Description:
Seabeam 2112 (12 Khz) swath bathymetric sonar system. The system, originally used for high accuracy
(Seabeam Classic) charting of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), is capable of hydrographic
charting and seafloor acoustic backscatter imaging in water depths of 50 to 11,000 meters with up to
151 beams. Swath coverage (75 percent of water depth) varies as a function of depth, from 150
degrees at 1,000 meters, to 120 degrees at 5,000 meters, and 90 degrees at 11,000 meters, with a
resolution of two degrees. The system regularly operates in 4000+ meters of water but is effective
in shallower applications (less than 500m).

Description:
Jason is a two-body ROV system. A 10-kilometer (6-mile) fiber-optic tether delivers electrical power and
commands from the ship through Medea and down to Jason, which then returns data and live video imagery.
Medea serves as a shock absorber, buffering Jason from the movements of the ship, while providing
lighting and a bird?s eye view of the ROV during seafloor operations. Jason is equipped with sonar
imagers, water samplers, video and still cameras, and lighting gear. Jason?s manipulator arms collect
samples of rock, sediment, or marine life and place them in the vehicle?s basket or on ?elevator?
platforms that float heavier loads to the surface. Pilots and scientists work from a control room on the
ship to monitor Jason?s instruments and video while maneuvering the vehicle. The average Jason dive
lasts 21 hours, though operators have kept the vehicle down for as long as 100 hours.
