+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | OCEANUS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: OC 449-3 Voyage Dates: 08 - 18 Sep, 2008 Chief Scientist(s): Phoebe Lam (Lam/Stubbins) Address: 266 Woods Hole Rd Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry (Clark 461) WHOI MS#25 Woods Hole, MA 02543 Phone: 508-289-3792 Email: pjlam @whoi.edu Cruise Objective: To test the hypothesis that the continental margin of northwest Africa provides a significant subsurface supply of iron to the open eastern tropical Atlantic Science Activities: CTD;s, SeaSoar Winch to deploy 11 battery-operated pumps on .375 inch diameter Cortland Vectran to 1000 m. Would like to place winch on 01 deck and deploy off side Hydroboom with SSSG Non-metallic block, Boyle MITESS Samplers, and Gravity Cores off Trawl Wire thru A-frame. Also Aerosol Sampling in front of ship's mast- fwd- JA6/18 42nm to first station, 5 stations, 40-140nm between stations, expect 2 days on station. Aron Stubbins (ODU): Collect 1 x 500L deep (~5000m by CTD) sample at one of Phoebe Lam's stations. Collect 1 x 500L surface sample (from underway)at the point of highest surface productivity within the upwelling system - as determined by ocean colour chlorophyll at time of cruise. Mike Perdue-In Wetlab with Reverse Osmosis to isolate DOM from large vols of seawater- JA 6/18 Operations Area: Coastal transect between Cape Verde and Mauritanian coast 17N/24.5W to 20N/17.3W 0-5000m Depth Demob Sept. 20th Departure Port: Porto Grande, Cape Verde Agent: Agencia Nacional de Viagens SA Avenida da Republica 15/17 P.O. Sci to provide standard seawater WHOI-Provided Equipment: Gravity corer JA4/08 Trace metal block (SSSG) SeaSoar SeaMac winch (SSSG) Science Party-Provided Hytrel coated Vectran (sci. provided) Cortland Equipment: Breaking Strength 5000 lbs, .375 inches outside dia. JA 6/18 Notes: nighttime work anticipated The 11 in-situ pumps each have a shipping crate ~3'x4'x2' need to store. We have arranged with SSSG to use Frank Bahr's SeaSoar SeaMac winch to deploy up to 11 battery-operated in-situ pumps using our own plastic-coated non metallic wire (1000m). If possible, we would like to place this winch on the 01 deck and deploy off the hydroboom. We have also asked to use the non metallic metering block that SSSG has. note about hazardous material from Pheobe Lam: a) We will bring emergency spill kits for the acid and base we will be using. b) acids and bases will be neutralized for disposal at the end of the cruise. Aron Stubbins needs: Electrical power: 3 phase, 250V, 40A , also stowage for large tanks, (3 X 200 liters) and carboys (25 x 20 liters) Other Notes: The SeaSoar SeaMac winch must be shipped back to W.H.O.I. from Las Palmas The 11 pumps each have shipping crates ~ 3' X 4' X 2'. Aron needs a large volume (~500 l) @ depth of 5000 m, so needs rosette with greatest volume niskins. Aron has been told we no longer have 30 liter niskins and he understand he will have to do double casts to get water volume he wants)JA 5/28/08 PI: Aron Stubbins Dept.
