Post-cruise download of raw data from shipboard computer(s) as furnished by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Shipboard Scientific Support Group and archived by the Marine Biological Laboratory Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Library for the R/V Oceanus - Cruise 444 Leg 01.

These data are part of a collection of ocean observation data from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ships OCEANUS (call sign WXAQ; built 1975.00; IMO 7603617), KNORR (call sign KCEJ; built 1970.00; IMO 7738618), and the ATLANTIS (call sign KAQP; built 1997.03; IMO 9105798). The data sets are the downloads of the shipboard computers after an individual cruise. As such, they contain basic raw and processed physical and meteorological data from the cruise. A data set may include XBT, CTD, and XCTD profiles, underway thermosalinograph and atmospheric measurements, gravity and magnetic field measurements, current measurements from ADCP, and still photographs from the Alvin submersible (Atlantis cruises only). Other data types (ROV, nutrients measured from bottle samples, etc.) and photographs documenting the cruise may be included.
<purpose>These data are the result of an effort to obtain all available Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) cruise data sets since 1998 and make them publicly available through NODC.</purpose>

<formcont>Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) cruise data

These data are part of an effort to obtain all available Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) cruise data sets 1998-present and make
them publicly available through NODC. A cruise data set is a post-cruise
download of shipboard computer as deposited at the WHOI library. For
more information see "http://dlaweb.whoi.edu/DIG_RES/cruisedata.html".

The cruise data sets consist of directories, each of which may contain
scientifically valuable data from the cruise. The main identified
directories and the data they contain are listed below. Each cruise
data set may contain one or more of the following (note that the
directory names are all capitalized here; in the cruise data set they
may be all capitalized, all lower case, or a combination):

Meteorological and thermosalinograph:

ATHENA90 - contains meteorological data from the IMET (Improved
Meteorological Package), which includes the following: SST, air
temperature, wind speed, wind direction, barometric pressure, solar
radiation, long wave radiation, humidity, precipitation, aerosol levels,
sea surface conductivity (salinity). Comment: This is the same
information found in ATHENA and/or CALLIOPE in a special format.
ATHENA - see ATHENA90. This is the same information, in another format.
CALLIOPE - see ATHENA90. This is the same information, in another format.
ATHENA99 - same as ATHENA90.

Currents:

ADCP - Acoustic Doppler current profiler, measures current speed and
current direction.
ADCP75 - same as ADCP, different format (including binary).
ADCP_DATA - same as ADCP

Hydrographic profiles:

CTD - Conductivity-Temperature-Depth. Measures profiles of ocean
temperature, salinity, pressure and sometimes oxygen, transmissivity,
and fluorescence. These data may be in a processed form (ASCII CSV
format) or unprocessed binary files (output from the Seasoft software).
SIPPICAN_XCTD - same data as CTD, different format (including binary).
XBT - Expendable bathythermograph, used to measure ocean temperature
profiles. The type of XBT is noted in individual files. These data may
be in the form of processed ASCII files or binary files.
XCTD - Expendable bathythermograph, used to measure ocean temperature
and salinity profiles. Has the same ASCII and binary format as XBT
data.
SALT-O2 - Salinity and dissolved oxygen measurements from salinometers
and oxygen titration hydrographic analysis instruments.
MOCNESS - Multiple Opening and Closing Net, with an Environmental Sensing
System: sensors report conductivity (salinity), temperature, depth, and
chlorophyll, oxygen and light levels.

Bathymetry:

CENTERBEAM - SeaBeam multibeam echosounder, bathymetric and sidescan data.
SEABEAM - SeaBeam multibeam echosounder, bathymetric and sidescan data.
KNUDSEN - Knudsen echosounder for measuring bathymetry.

Alvin submersible:

ALVIN - photographic stills from Alvin.
ALVIN_EXT_STILLS - photographic stills from Alvin.
ALV_EXT_STILLS - photographic stills from Alvin.
ALV_EXTERNAL_STILLS - photographic stills from Alvin.
ALVIN_EXTERNAL_STILLS - photographic stills from Alvin.
3### - (any directory 3000 - 3999) dive information from numbered dive
of Alvin.
4### - (any directory 4000 - 4999) dive information from numbered dive
of Alvin.
5### - (any directory 5000 - 5999) dive information from numbered dive
of Alvin.

Gravity/magnetic field:

MAGNETOMETER - measurements of Earth's magnetic field.
MAGNETOMOETER - same as MAGNETOMETER
MAGNETICS - same as MAGNETOMETER
GRAVITY - measurements of Earth's gravitational field.
GRAVITY_DATA - same as GRAVITY

Miscellaneous:

SHARE - shared files utilized on the cruise.
SCRIPTS - shared resources; shells.
DOCS - documents for cruise, instrumentation.
SCIENCE - miscellaneous documents saved to disk by science team.
SHIPTRACK - navigational information.
TERASCAN - satellite data uploaded from another source. They are not
unique cruise data.

Cruise photographs:

CRUISE_PARTICIPANTS - photos and biographies of cruise participants.
CRUISE_PICTURES - cruise photographs.
PICTURES - photographs from cruise.
IMAGES - photographs.
