+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | OCEANUS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: OC 315 Voyage Dates: 8 - 11 Jan 1998 Chief Sci(s): Frank Bub/Wendell Brown Address: Ocean Process Analysis Lab (OPAL) 142 Morse Hall University of New Hampshire Durham, NH 03824 Phone: 603-862-3154 (FB) / - 3153 (WB) Email: frank.bub@unh.edu, wsbrown@kelvin.sr.unh.edu Cruise Objective: "An Observational/Modelling Study of Wintertime Convection and Water Mass Formation (CONVEX)" - NSF grant OCE-9530249. Primary mission: Place a suite of instrument moorings in the central Wilkinson Basin (42-42' N, 69-38' W). Secondary mission: before and after the mooring deployments (as time permits), conduct a hydrographic survey of the basin area. Science Activities: Sub-surface mooring recovery/redeployment, CTD/rosette casts (optimistically 20-25 stations) Initially, we will acoustically release and recover the bottom of a mooring placed at this site in October '97 and set adrift early December (due we suspect to fishing activity - we have recovered the buoy and tackle to about 215 m depth. Flotation, rubber bands and an acoustic release are still attached to the anchor). Three moorings will then be placed to augment a guard buoy and thermister chain deployed at this site in October 1997. These include (1) a 5 ft dia steel guard buoy, (2) a 6 ft dia foam instrument buoy with an IMET weather package on the tower, a string of 4 temp-cond pairs on a cunducting cable, and 2 workhorse ADCP units mid-depth, and (3) a subsurface Aandaraa thermister chain. This set of deployments will be confined to a tight triangle 100-150 m on a side. Operations Area: Wilkinson Basin / Gulf of Maine 42-43N, 69-71W Water depth: 60-280 m SSSG Tech: Laura Stein, sssg @oceanus.whoi.edu Departure Port: Woods Hole Agent: NA Arrival Port: Woods Hole Agent: NA Installed Scientific 12kHz echo sounder+recorder Equipment: ADCP IMET sensors Underway water system (temp+conductivity) Data logger WHOI-Provided Science CTD/rosette system, SBE-911 Tools: (w/ 5 l. bottles+transmissometer) Chest freezer (1) Pinger (wire mounted) Program-Provided All mooring equipment Science Tools: Shipboard Standard navigation Equipment/Nav: Standard communications (voice,FAX,email) Deck capstan Crane Hydrowinch (CTD ops) Trawl winch (potential dragging ops) Air tuggers Other Requirements: None Notes: * Point of Contact & ChSci is Frank Bub * Requirement for continuous depth recorder use * We hope to download all ship recorded data (CTD/met/tsal/navigation/adcp) before docking * No special computer requirements (we will use ship PCs and bring our laptops) * Anticipate deployment of jacket wire mooring cables from drums (2@100m, 1@215m) Navy Clearance Status: Last Modified: 12/13/2006 Check List: Required?
