+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 03-08 Voyage Dates: 28 Sep - 15 Oct 1997 Chief Sci(s): Paul Johnson/Keir Becker Address: School of Oceanography WB-10 Univ. of Washington Seattle, WA 98195 Phone: (206) 543-8474 Email: johnson@ocean.washington.edu Cruise Objective: The multiple purposes of this leg are: 1) the recovery of instrumentation utilized to study time dependent changes in very young oceanic crust; 2) the deployment of a Pogo-mode thermal blanket for bare rock heat flow studies; 3) to begin a prototype study of the hypothesis regarding the presence of a sub-surface biosphere in hydrothermal vent systems; and 4) the recovery of data from instrumented borehole sites for geochemical and microbiological studies as part of the CORK experiment. Night time activities will include surface and deep-towed magnetometer lowerings and thermal blanket lowerings. Science Activities: 15 ALVIN dives Becker: CORK instrument deployment/recovery at borehole sites, geochemistry Lilley: utilization of Becker instruments/samples, microbiology Johnson/Cowen/Tivey: deep-tow magnetometer, recovery of 4 seafloor magnetometers, thermal blanket deployment Operations Area: Juan de Fuca: Endeavor: 47-53'N, 128-41'W Gorda Ridge: 42-40'N, 126-46'W Middle Valley: 48-26'N, 128-41'W Cascadia: 47-42'N, 127-47'W SSSG Tech: Greg Herlein, sssg@atlantis.whoi.edu Departure Port: Astoria, OR Agent: Ship Service Company c/o Master, RV ATLANTIS Port of Astoria Foot of Portway Astoria, OR 97103 Tele: (503) 325-3721 Fax: (503) 325-4109 Lou Maconeri Arrival Port: Astoria, OR Agent: Ship Service Company c/o Master, RV ATLANTIS Port of Astoria Foot of Portway Astoria, OR 97103 Tele: (503) 325-3721 Fax: (503) 325-4109 Lou Marconeri Installed Scientific Data logging (Standard) Equipment: IMET data (standard) Depth recorders 12kHz transducers SeaBeam: possible navigation use Pingers, wire use WHOI-Provided Science CTD/rosette required; bottles: 24/10 liter Tools: Transmissometer (???) Surface-towed magnetometer ALVIN magnetometer ALVIN heat flow probe Imagenex sonar Program-Provided Science Tools: Shipboard CTD winch (CTD ops + other) Equipment/Nav: Trawl winch (not required) Crane Standard communications Isotope van Dynamic Positioning P-code GPS Other Requirements: Notes: 1) There is an overnight turnaround from preceeding cruise. Schedule assumes efficient offloading of preceeding cruise, minimum of logistical shoreside support required for loading this cruise, and a late 15 October arrival at Astoria at the end of the cruise. 2) Schedule provides 2 days to transit between dive sites. 3) Navigation net deployment and use to be determined by ALVIN ops group. 4) The night time program will include deep towed CTD casts, thermal blanket lowerings and tiltmeter lowerings/deployments. CTD cable used for all. QUESTION: Is a single WHOI termination suited to all instruments??? 5) Tilt meter deployment requires lowering and positioning instruments precisely on the bottom then electrically releasing them to deploy. 6) Thermal blanket tripod is 3' hi x 7' x 7'. Lowered to bottom and held there 2-3 hours. Signals up the cable. 7) The isotope van will be required. Presume will be located in van storage space fwd. Power and H2O must be provided. 8) Fume hood required in the lab as well as in the isotope van. 9) CTD ops: Software component can/will be handled by UW sci. personnel. Hardware (maintenance) to be handled by SSSG Marine tech. Number, size and use of bottles should be discussed w/ UW sci. 10) Main deck layout and use need to be coordinated for portable winch configuration, van placement, boat storage, tilt meter storage, thermal blanket tripod storage and instrument lowerings from CTD cable. 11) CHEMICAL STORAGE: How are toxic and hazardous chemicals to be stored? 12) It is possible UW could provide a backup surface towed magnetometer? 13) QUESTION: Is it desireable/possible to move/remove portable Dynacon traction winch components from the ship for this cruise??
