CTD work will be limited, just a few tows. My understanding is Dan Fornari has already talked with Liz about the possible use of his fiber optic towed camera if the system is ready to go to sea. This is the 3rd of 3 funded cruises on this project and will be very similar in scope (dive locations, sampling requirements, etc.)to AT15-13. We will also require use of the nitrogen generator. As we anticipate extensive use of the mill-q system there should be a spare set of cartridges for it on board. I am completing my personnel list, at this time I anticipate there will be ~20 in the science party. I will check on the status of my existing WHOI POs with UNH. They sometimes 'reset' at the start of our fiscal year (July 1). This is the same grant as AT15-13, so that PO is appropriate (not the one opened for AT15-17). ALVIN/JASON Installed or Normally Major Water Sampler - w/ICL's) Carried Equipment: Small Capicity Slurp Pump Bio Box - 12x12x12 Scoop Nets High & Low Temperature Probes Digital Still Camera - Oriented Forward (10/26-JD) Search Sonar Profiling Sonar Elevator USBL Navigation Doppler/GPS Navigation Science Party-Provided Gas tight bottles. Equipment: We will use either the Girguis MS or CH4 analyzer - not sure which yet. I will get the detailed specs from Marv Lilley as to their requirements. These were on an Alvin cruise in August but did not operate. Laptop(s) - already been sniffed Notes: Its essential we have 6 majors pairs, equipped with ICLs to accomplish our sampling objectives. We'd like to use the calibrator and RTD to calibrate the various Alvin and ICL T probes. I will double check as to what we want for vehicle sonars and cameras - basket load is the crucial parameter and this will set the constraints as to what else can be on the vehicle. There is already a net in the 9 50 area, I am unsure if a net remains to cover the 9 46N area. As we will do a substantial # of dives in this area, it will make sense to deploy transponders here. We will do a single dive at 9 39.8 and just use doppler. We will recover the two currently deployed res probes which may require the use of an elevator. Regular elevator use is not anticipated. PIT Dives on #5 (10/26-JD) Liz Goehring from RIDGE 2000 has a education outreach program that will require sending large files (photos and voice clips) from the ship to a shoreside website. She is also planning a call from shore to the ship and down to Alvin. Liz will need the capability to send large files and need priority over outgoing data. (11/26 EC) Info from Liz: We are currently working with GLOBE science education program (www.globe.gov) to host a cruise website for the FLEXE project. GLOBE has a substantial network of students and teachers around the world who will be accessing the website to follow the cruise. GLOBE has schools in 109 countries so this is a significant network to reach. Additionally we have 24 schools (~1000 students in US and Germany) who are participating in a pilot test of the FLEXE Energy Unit and will also be accessing the cruise website to read feedback from cruise scientists. The GLOBE/FLEXE cruise website plans include: o Cruise participant bios posted at the start of the cruise, o Cruise log updates (text/images/photostories) every few days, o Teacher Blog (also every few days), o Ask-a- Scientist responses as part of our FLEXE Forum (the questions will being collected from students involved in our FLEXE Pilot in advance of the cruise - we will post responses on the website from scientists during the cruise).
