Subject: NODC receipt confirmation for Eric Webb; microscopy synechococcus counts per ml from the euphotic zone From: "Danie Kinkade" Date: Fri, December 10, 2010 1:04 pm To: eawebb@usc.edu Dear Eric Webb, Thank you for submitting your synechococcus count data and metadata to the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center. The NODC received your data and metadata on 06 December, 2010 via email attachment. Your submission has been assigned NODC Accession Number 0069125, which is a tracking number for the NODC Ocean Archive. Please reference this number when corresponding with NODC about these data. You can find information about your archival data set at http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/accession/0069125. While reviewing your submission, some questions were generated; we're hoping you can help answer or resolve these, in order to provide the best possible version of your data and metadata for the archive and for users discovering and understanding your data. The excel file submitted contains two sheets; one, labeled "syne" is assumed to be the synechococcus data, but is the second sheet labeled "tricho" intended for archive? Could you confirm that trichodesmium counts were also submitted? The Electronic Data Documentation Form states only synechococcus for submission. The submission does not contain header descriptions or definitions in the file or accompanying metadata. Could you please provide a description or definition of the headers that would help users understand the contents of each sheet (for example could you clarify that depth on sheet "tricho" is in meters, and the definition of the header "fil/10L")? Each sheet also contains graphics that are not titled or labeled. Could you provide this information or perhaps submit the plots or graphs as separate images? Within the data itself, geographic position is recorded in a very coarse resolution. Is it possible to provide a higher resolution than whole degrees latitude and longitude? The sheet entitled "tricho" contains data from stations that have no geographic position, date or cruise reference. Do these stations correspond to the station numbers within sheet "syne"? There are data on this sheet for depths that do not correspond to any station and this sheet also contains columns of data with no header or description. Perhaps the easiest solution would be to resubmit these data once these minor issues have been resolved. Again, we thank you for providing your data for archive and appreciate your time and attention in this matter. We look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Danie Kinkade
