+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 15-20 Voyage Dates: 22-29 July, 2007 Chief Sci(s): Anthony Rathburn (Rathburn) Address: Indiana State University Geology Program Science Bldg 159 Terre Haute, IN 47809 Phone: 812-237-2269 Email: arathburn @indstate.edu Cruise Objective: We propose to collect precisely-placed samples from the targeted environments using an ROV and to analyze the samples for the three-dimensional distribution of foraminifera in the sediment, their food preferences, the presence/absence of symbionts, and carbon isotopic composition using a variety of recently developed techniques. Foraminiferal chemistry and distribution will be compared with pore water chemical and isotopic composition.* To examine a broad spectrum of isotopic environments, we propose a coupled study of both non-seep sediments and nearby cold methane seep environments, where steep geochemical gradients occur. The specific hypotheses to be tested are: 1) The carbon isotopic composition of foraminiferal carbonate is influenced by clustering of individuals within sub-millimeter seep microenvironments. 2) The carbon isotopic composition of foraminiferal carbonate is influenced by diet. 3) The carbon isotopic composition of benthic foraminiferal carbonate is influenced by prokaryotic, non-photosynthetic symbionts. Multi core will be deployed from .322 wire fwd of cold van. (EC 3/2) PIs plan to recover Jason every 8-12hrs to bring cores up (EC 3/2) A multicore tech will not be provided by WHOI. Science party has multicore experience (EC 3/2) Mutlicore will be used between Jason dives. Standard spill kits will suffice for the types and volumes of materials that we will use. All hazardous materials will be used in the preservation of samples, and will be off-loaded at the end of the cruise. PIs have requested to load their gear (7-10 pallets & some chems) in San Diego on 1-2 July, before Valentine cruise. Will depend on space available in science hold. Night Work Anticipated You can find the latest site information and deck plans at the following ftp site (JD 7/6) [1]ftp://ftp.whoi.edu/pub/marine/cruisefiles/Cruise%20Info/ATLANTIS/AT15-20%20Rathburn/General%20Info Load Plan (EC 6/21) San Fran port stop Rathburn; 18 July after 10am: Large shore crane to load Jason vans -Old Isotope van will come off the bow and be shipped back from SF to WHOI -New Isotope van will be moved from the main deck port side to the bow where the old Isotope van was (van spot: port side off centerline) -empty Jason vehicle will be put on the bow, port side -2 Jason control vans 01 deck -1 tool van (port side) -1 rigging van (as close to rigging van and port side as possible to make room for mooring gear) -Jason & Media -UNOLS cold van (starboard side main deck) We think this is going to arrive in SF the 18 or 19th of July, the ships crane can pick this on, it's aluminum and weighs less than 10K. cold van can go aft of the work boat if it fits or work boat can be moved , work boat will not be needed for Rathburn. -We should plan not to store the Alvin tracks under the A-frame or any place on the main deck. Embley/DiIorio will be needed the max deck space on the main deck for Embley/DiIorio mooring gear & set up, instruments, and the AUV. 22 July: depart for Rathburn 29 July: Rathburn arrives in Astoria and offloads gear and cold van.
