+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | OCEANUS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: OC 430 Voyage Dates: 18 Sept - 08 Oct, 2006 Chief Sci(s): Nicholas Makris (Makris) Address: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Ocean Engineering 77 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 Phone: 617-258-6104 Email: makris@mit.edu Cruise Objective: A remote sensing method has been used to instantaneously detect, image, and spatially chart fish populations over continental shelf-scales, as well as continuously monitor aerial densities and behavior of these fish populations over time. The objective of the Gulf of Maine cruise is to apply this remote sensing method to explore the abundance, temporal and spatial distributions, and fish population behavior in the Gulf of Maine on or near Georges Bank. To verify aerial fish population density and species identification, the new method will be used in conjunction with simultaneous measurements of fish population by conventional line-transect methods that employ direct sampling with trawling, as well as standard higher frequency acoustics.
