The main scientific research objective is to focus on the fate of methane seeping naturally into the marine environment to determine the impact of microbial methane oxidation on the flux of methane from the sediments to the ocean/atmosphere in areas of active gas seepage. The planned activities include Alvin dives, CTD casts, box and gravity coring. The operations area will be the Santa Barbara Channel and the Santa Cruz Basin in the vicinity of 34-7N, 119-41W.  Scientific marine research within the exclusive economic zone of any foreign nation is strictly prohibited.
