+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 15-11 Voyage Dates: 26 Sept - 13 Oct, 2006 Chief Sci(s): Victoria Orphan, Lisa Levin (Orphan/Levin) Address: Orphan - Caltech 1200 E. California Blvd. Mail Code 100-23 Pasadena,CA 91125 Phone: Orphan - 626 395-1786 Email: vorphan@gps.caltech.edu Cruise Objective: ORPHAN To examine the diversity in community structure and variation in natural abundance 13C isotopic values for microorganisms in relation to geochemical gradients and carbonate formation within methane seep habitats. LEVIN: Study the ecology, physiology and evolution of methane seep sediment faunas (with focus on dorvilleid polychaetes) in association with microbial and geochemical environments. Science Activities: ORPHAN: 1) Collect sediment push cores from different methane seep habitats (chemosynthetic clam beds, microbial mats, active bubbling sites) for geochemistry, microbial community analysis, 13C and 15N isotopic analysis for microbial biomass, and shipboard microcosm experiments. 2) Recover year-long seafloor incubation experiments (4 sand stone cores approximately ~ 8 in long and <2" diameter to be recovered by manipulator arm and secured in Alvin push core quiver + 2 microbial colonization stakes with T-handle to be recovered via attached PVC quiver provided by the Orphan science party). 3) collection of seafloor carbonate rocks with manipulator arm + transported in biobox. 4) collect niskin water samples above active methane bubbling. 5) Night operations include multicoring within seep area and oxygen minimum zone. LEVIN (JD per EC update 8/17): (1) Recovery of colonization tray experiments at Eel R. and Hydrate Ridge seeps to test settlement response to sulfides (use of gear elevator+sub). (2) collection of sediment in push cores/box cores for measurements of sulfide, sulfate reduction, animal distributions/nutritional properties, shipboard incubation experiments with 13C tracers, nitrogen fixation, microbial consortia, sediment properties etc. (3) recovery of carbonate and wood colonization substrates (4) large animal collections via biobox, scoop and slurp for nutritional studies (fatty acid, lipids, isotopes). (5) photographic surveys of seep and carbonate epifauna/habitat structure (6) rock collections (carbonates) Night operations will include CTD casts and water sampling + some multicoring transects across the oxygen minimum zones off CA/OR (400-1200 m). Fume hood use for formaldehyde fixation. Ability to copy video tapes of dives + still shots. Other Requirements: Night Work Anticipated 2-4 days (Multi-core) CTD, seabeam (JD per EC update 8/17) Notes: Science gear is currently stored in the hold (~10 boxes + liquid nitrogen container to be filled in Astoria) Will need a multicorer (Coring tech will be provided by WHOI). Will need high quality still photo imagery with laser scaling for photos. Will require approximately 5 pallets worth of gear to be offloaded in San Diego on October 13th, 2006. Nitrogen tanks (2) and Argon tank (1)- currently on board. Orphan: will load LN2 dewer in Astoria (EC 8/24) ALVIN Push Cores - We will want the maximum push cores- probably 24 for each dive day except for one dive where we will leave some quiver slots open for collection of the sandstone core deployments from 2005. Push cores will not be kept, but some (~25% max) may be processed the following day due to time constraints and may not be available for the next day's dive. Hazardous Material is presently stored in the chemical van on deck. Copies of the inventory + MSDS was provided to first mate at time of loading (July 2006). LEVIN Notes from (JD per EC update 8/17. Will be using Dukane pingers (37kHz) on deployments Nitrogen tanks (10) Need 1 elevator per day ALVIN Push Cores - We will want the maximum - probably 24. We won't be keeping cores but it may take more than 2 days to process them and turn them around Navy Clearance Status: Granted 09/22/06: WITHIN 100 NM RADIUS OF 40-48N 124-36W DURING PERIOD 260700Z SEP THRU 130700Z OCT 06 WITHIN 100 NM RADIUS OF 44-00N 125-00W DURING PERIOD 260700Z SEP THRU 130700Z OCT 06 Last Modified: 09/25/2006 Check List: Required?
